Because it's under a foot of snow and not frozen which makes it very handy for a person or wheeler to end up in! That's why its a big deal.
I said the reason doesn't matter and I'm glad you agree with me.

The person/people who did that should be held accountable if someone gets killed!!! Absolutely ignorant!!! Did that pic get sent to the DEC by chance??? It should!!!!
Last year nothing was marked after a recovery ,

Hi all, first trip on ice this yr to oneida,  heading out of briggs bay on Thursday. Wondering if there are any bad ice areas to look out for. Thanks in advance for any info !

I almost guarantee that someone cut that hole to get a 4 wheeler or sled out.

I've seen similar holes cut on a little Madison county lake I fish this year. The person cut it with a chain saw and it appears he was using it to catch crappie at night.  He had jigging holes cut in close proximity and I believe he was using the bigger hole for his light to draw them in.....  I've never seen him there in the day light, he comes shortly after dark.

Madison county crappie light night bite? I know the exact lake 🤣

On Sandusky Bay in Lake Erie where I grew up they put Christmass trees in the area. In the spring they sank.

Not 100% sure wasnt out today but i can see slush showing up near shore, warm temps friday with rain may help cold temps again saturday night and sunday,,,i would say walking will be very tuff and you better have a decent machine, wheelers will have it tough

Many years ago I did see a large rectangular hole cut intentionally and it was from a scuba diving club from syracuse having an outing off cleveland They had a good time that day and when it was over they marked it off.

My bud was out today and said the walk is getting tough , it was sticking to his rig on the way in , hopefully we get a good dose of rain and wind to settle it down and a little cold
He also seen a sled get stuck in the hateful slush

The word I got today is that it’s slushy and it was a little tough for sleds to get going. It’s going to be messy for a bit. Be safe everyone!!😎

In response to the large rectangular hole, I walked up on one while fishing Owasco lake many years ago. Unfortunately it was at dusk and I was alone and nearly stepped right into it over 15’ of water. Fortunately I didn’t but really think it was someone very ignorant or a first time ice fisherman without an auger using a chainsaw.  Hearing that there were a few of these on Oneida makes me think it was the same group being stupid, but not intentional, while trying to catch a fish.  Hopefully they come to their senses before making a tragic mistake for themselves or someone else.
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

It ain’t pretty but I’m shocked that I could move at all. No shanty, just testing the snow/slush.

Well with the weight on the ice , cracks and auger holes , water seeps into the snow creates slush , this isn’t anything new

I measured 10” of snow on the ice in the Cleveland area tonight.

A lot of slush near shore but not bad once I got out a little ways.
