motorized ice rods
« on: Jan 24, 2005, 04:45 PM »
Hi everyone,
I was reading in an article on the latest ice rods on the market and came across a motorized ice rod, called the buzz stix. What is used mostly for is micro jigging, when you only want the lure quivering. It has replacable batteries that can last for up to 10 hours of continuous use. I was wondering has anyone ever seen one or tried them out. If so what were your thoughs on them a compared to a regular ice rod and jigging styles?

They're great, makes a world of difference at times. Have watched fish just stop and stare at a jig lifted up and down only an inch, drop the same jig and bait combo in there then let the buzz stik do it's thing and they nail it. Not a sure thing cure all, nothing is, but a solid tool/option worth having. Works shallow and deep, love mine.

I have never used to the buzz stick, but I heard many reports that it was really just a gimmick, that the motor didn't really move the bait and often crapped out and got ruined from moisture. I heard the rod itself was of good quality though.

Gimmick? No doubt, but one that seems to work. This is my second season with it and just installed the fourth battery, hasn't missed a beat yet. Warm, frigid, damp or dry still buzzing. It does have a nice rod, just like the subtle action it can put on a bait. Movement without really going anywhere, need that sometimes.

That movement created by the motor would probably be really good for fishing shrimpos, ratsos, and nuclear ants, all of which have legs or tails that shimmy and twitch even while sitting still.

I was reading some posts earlier in the season that said they really worked well in shallow water but,the action was lost if you got into deeper water. I don't know what they considered deep but that sounds possible to me and it probably depends on line and jig size as well.Good question- I have been wondering about getting one as well.

One the buzz stick 2 there is an automatic setting that you can set for aggressive neutral or negative feeding patterns.  Then all you have to do is put it in a tip down a it works by itself.

Marine General sent me a catalog, so I would imagine they ship to Canada.

I got mine from walmart. They make the bait quiver, which makes a pretty good action. I caught my biggest lake trout so far on that rod. I thought it was going to snap, becuase its only a little perch rod.

i had one and wasn't impressed at all. when i buzzed the rod it often brought in curious fish but when you buzzed it again it would startle them. would never buy one again and the one i did have went back to gander mountain.

in my opinion ...JUNK....tried over a dozen in the store.every one had a different amount of "buzz".After over a year of hearing good and bad ,i bought one and tried it in 15 ft of water.on the cam,NO movement visible.i can twitch it by hand and see it move on my cam and flasher but not with THE STICK.watched a 15 inch bass come up and nail the jig"not while buzzing"and didnt feel it!!!!very poor sensitivity, the rod has to bend till it touches the handle to feel it.returned it the next day.

Stumper and Wormwiggler,
Were you using the the buzz stix or the buzz stix2? The second one sounds like you can control the movement a bit better deepening on the fish's mood.

The wife bought one for me last year, after using 3 times the wires to the battery came loose, the pole is to stiff for me, but I still use the reel which is not to bad.

I caught a nice laker this year on my motorized perch rod. I have found the lighter the jig you use, the more action you get..seems like common sense to me.
