Hickory Grove ice report
« on: Dec 07, 2007, 11:48 AM »
I just phonee the Story County Conservation people.  They don't recommend activity on Hickory Grove yet.  I was sure hoping to hit it this weekend.  Anybody out there disagree with their report?  I'd like to see 4 inches before my big butt gets out there.

Hey Rick- Thanks for the reply.  I'm just 10 minutes West of Marshalltown.  Let me know what you find out.  Brother, I'm 260 so I need that extra inch of ice :) I can hardly stand it though so I could throw on the life jacket and go.  My cell phone if that works better for you  641-485-3479

Good, I have some areas at RC I'd like to try.  I did pretty well over there this year in open water although not a lot of big fish.  I did catch some nice bass so they're in there.

FishRMan the Pond just NE of town on the way to the old dump had4" in the NE corner a couple days ago.  Not to far west of the corner though it hadn't froze over until abut 3-4 days ago.  Looks like a bunch of snow on it now .  I've got a couple errands to run now but I bet I try it today or tomorrow.

Thanks Old Bear.  I've always wondered about that little pond.  You fish it much?  You must have a lot of contacts.  Anyway, good luck and let me know how things go.

FishRMan,  That little pond was good for 12 bluegill and 4 bass today with about 6" of Ice in the one corner.  Hickory Grove two days ago off  the end of the dock on the South boat ramp had only about 1 1/2" of ice.  Its got pretty cold since but I'm waitin on that one.

I drove down to Hickory Grove today and they are not wrong, walked out from south shore in two places and drilled test holes close to shore less than 2" of ice.

hey fishRman the ice on my pond in newton is still little iffy.  i fished it last night and the ice was 3 in spots 4 in others and as thin as 1 inch too.  i was scared off when the ice was cracking under my feet.

Guys, i live in the Marshalltown area, the only good ice i knowof is the norht end of Union Grove.  Was there on Saturday before the snow hit, saw schools of gills on the cameral, but they wouldn't get close enough to bite...perhaps the storm had them locked up.

Keep the reports coming!!!

I fished on the silt pond Saturday, however the ice was only about 3 inches.  I normally don't tell people safe ice unitl it is about 5+.  Just a habit of mine, sense i have been led down the wrong road a few times.  Silt pond had some biters, but few and far between.

I really only fish Uniong Grove early ice, normally because it is the first one ready.

I fish Rock Creek, and Hickory Grove the most through the ice.

hotrod, fished Hickory Grove today.   Can't speak for the whole lake but the picnic area East of the South boat ramp had 6" of ice.  Was 6-8 others out also North from the So. boat ramp.

Two buddies and I fished HG last night from about 5-9pm.  Good action all through the night except for about a 1/2 hour nothing seemed to want anything we threw at them.   We were fishing near a brush pile in 21 foot of water.  Caught about 40 fish and 1/2 of them were keepers for fry.  About 1/2 gills and 1/2 crappies.  A fun night, the fish made us work for them, and changing colors often was a neccesity, a VEXILAR was manditory.  Ice conditions on the east side of the lake look good, found most areas with about 5 inches of nice looking ice.  The lake was loud last night too, more ice for next time  ;D
