Zipper "lube" suggestions
« on: Aug 27, 2013, 02:32 AM »
Hello all,
I was googling what to use to lubricate the zippers on my Clam and it came up with JigALoo.  I can't seem to find it, I thought I did once, ordered, and was emailed by the online store that they were out of stock and couldn't get more.
Does anyone have a good, accessible solution?
Thanks!

If you can locate a block of bee's or canning wax try rubbing the wax on zippers it may help lubricate them to some degree. Also try a company called Campmor they sell mostly back packing and camping gear, think they sold zipper lubricate at one time.

That's why there's a tube of cheap "Chapstick" type lip balm in my tacklebox.  It's mainly paraffin. ;D

SnoSeal is a good wax that wont get brittle in the hard cold. Made to waterproof boots. My 2 cents

I searched Campmor's website the product is called Zipper Care combination cleaner and mild lubricate. Did not see bottle size listed the Chapstick type lip balm or SnoSeal maybe a better value they want $3.99/bottle before ship/handling and any taxes. At least with the Snoseal you could also do your boots or other leather goods and it contains Beeswax among it's ingredients.

I rub a bar of soap on the teeth of the zipper and it seems to work well.

I typically fish above 9,000 altitude and the mornings are are often negative to single digit temps - denser materials tend to create a buildup that hardens and creates more issues than i had before

I use spray silicone on a small section of a small rag and with the hub door open, I wipe down each side of the zipper 1-2x a year

I use old pencils or you can get powdered graphite. Doesn't get gummy in cold temps like wax does.

I've used Jig-A-Loo on my ice tents for years and have nothing but good things to say about it. The zippers won't freeze, the oily smell leaves almost instantly, and it won't stain your hut. There are a number of places that sell it including Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, and many others. Just Google the product and it's all there.
She says " you've got to be nuts to go icefishing", my only reply is, " it helps".

I'm going to try pure Bees Wax.

I would think that would lock a zipper up when cold.

With just a thin film of Bees wax I think it will be OK, I'll report back if it isn't a good idea.
