Title: Ice Fishing Derby's
Post by: fisher97 on Jan 03, 2017, 08:03 PM
Did anyone else see the talk on here about a Spring Lake ice fishing derby in Hobart this year? I've been trying to find info about it, does anyone have the details?

Also, does anyone know of any others that will be going on? I know Loomis is having one Jan 28.

When I google the address it puts me next to Mac Joy Lake. Is this the same lake that everyone is talking about? I also see Robinson Lake is down the road from Mac Joy, but I've never been out there so I just want to know where I am going! Thanks! Is there a lake of the map we can get anywhere?

Just to clear things up, Mac Joy and Spring lake are one in the same. I'm a member of the ikes.  Sorry about not being able to post the upcoming derby for all to see. I've been on this site since 2012 but the "Gestapo" says I'm not active enough. I don't sit on this site talking garbage...I'm out FISHING!!!

I hope with the cold temps coming at night that it locks it back up.  I have never fished this lake despite growing up right down the road...is there any insight into the type of fish in this lake?  is it gills/crappie and bass tourney?   Just wondering and thanks for any input and hope everyone gets to come out this weekend.

The Lake has abundant Bass and  Bluegill  with Crappie ,Perch, catfish  to round out the mix. Very little fishing pressure makes for a great fishery. The derby is for all species.

I have passed this lake a million times and have always wondered how good the fishing would be there. Is there a boat ramp for members there. I never see people fishing it. Anyway, I can't wait to fish it. Hope the ice holds up!

I never thought about that. Is it catch and release? I hope not! Might not go as I want some fish for the freezer if that's the case!
Title: Re: Ice Fishing Derby's

The derby is catch and release.

Lol.   That's funny.   How do you release a fish after its been frozen for a few hours? I guess you'll have to walk each fish over to the check station after catching one.
Title: Re: Ice Fishing Derby's
Post by: goathead on Jan 13, 2017, 04:10 PM
I agree, how are you going to verify the fish. No one wants to have to go in every time they think they might have a big fish.

There will be check in persons out on the ice with radios that will measure and record your catch.

Put a little water in a bucket from your hole.  Should
keep five alive for days in the winter.

My thoughts exactly. Kinda ruins it for me. If I'm going to travel for a derby I want to keep a big one I might catch!

Probably close to 100 people out here. 4-5 inches of ice. Good breakfast and they got the grills going on shore but I'm cooking wings and fries on the heater. I haven't caught a fish bigger than my big toe but it beats sitting on the couch. Seen a few nice fish caught

We marked fish all day. My buddy won bluegill and lost a monster on a tip up I got third place in perch category with 12.5". Tip up took. 15" bass. Stable pressure had them lock jawed but would chase the my jig up. Something broke my 3lb braid.. never saw the fish. Looking forward to next year.

I was marking fish also, alas, no fish. a couple of light bumps, maybe imaginary? First time out this year and took the grandsons. Now the fever is in high gear, I gotta go soon again. Somewhere less traveled maybe....

To bad the forecast is for warm days and nights The next couple of days. The shore line is going to open up making it unsafe. The bites I had were light and quick. I would bet the evening bite is better there.

I agree with the previous comment that when you have that many folks rumblin' across the ice and gas augers and all the noise all at once that the fish tighten up. I have never had good luck at these type of tournaments but they are fun to get the kids out and have the camaraderie. Talked to a bunch of nice guys out today and the folks running it did a great job and a big shout out goes to them.

Fished the edge of this derby today, lots of 10-15" gills being caught.  I couldn't get any over 9".

Had an absolute blast. We caught a few bigger ones early then the bite was gone. It was a 2.5 hour trip to get there so thank you to Ice Shanty for sharing the info. We don't get much ice tourney info in Indy except online. Got to check out Bass Pro afterwards too so it was a great trip. Can't wait til the next one. Good job to all Izaak Walton guys and girls for all the hard work. It was a great day, thank you.

I'd like to see a pic of those. I did see a legit 17.5" crappie pic from that derby though.  Keep it up boys that was awesome!!!!
Title: Re: Ice Fishing Derby's
Post by: Bronzeback5 on Jan 14, 2017, 10:09 PM
I didn't believe the 17.5" crappie because I stopped listening right after he said they have 16-17" perch in there. I was expecting 10 cars in the lot when I pulled in, wrong...

Saw it on facebook.  Awesome fish.   Not suprised, I drive by everyday and may see 1 person out there a week, summer or winter. Little pressure, lets them grow

Pretty sure it's private for members. Place was in pretty poor shape and I hope this derby helps them out if only a little bit.

Its a Izaak Walton of Hobart property,  they are looking for membership to bring this place back to its glory days..  seems like they are off to a great start having this ice derby. Nice to see some positive progress.

My friends and I fished it yesterday. They had a great breakfast to start.
We had a fun day on the ice, Only the Cody the youngest one in our group managed a nice 12.5" perch for a 3rd place
Marked tons of fish all day, the bite was slow.
Ran some tip ups all day....we must have had 30 flags...15 bass biggest was 16"
Josh had a snapped line early,  maybe another monster crappie like  the one Ed Brown caught 17.5"

We will be back next year, nice to finally fish a lake I have drove by a million times.... Thanks to all that made this event possible..

I agree the derby was ran pretty well for being the first one out there at the lake!  Food was good and everyone was very helpful and nice.  My only suggestion would be to have someone either announcing every so often with a bullhorn from the shore... or having a board posted out near a couple locations on the ice that shows what the top 3 fish sizes in each category are so that we don't have to constantly call out "Fish" when the fish is clearly an inch or more below the top 3... but many of us just didn't know the sizes because they were not posted or announced!  they did this at a derby I went to up in Wisconsin and it was great and saved a lot of time for the anglers and those measuring.  That is just a suggestion for next time... but overall I have to say great job guys and I hope your efforts pay off and the lodge is opened up again successfully.  You were all a great group of guys and would definitely attend a later event in the years to come.

There is no way Loomis is going to have a derby after this heatwave. Is there any way that we could get a makeup date in mid Feb or something?!

Back to Isaak Walton....I was talking to one of the members at the derby and there is talk about a spring open water derby/contest. He was not sure on how they are going to run it. Thoughts are shore fishing or Jon boats(bring your own). Keep your eyes out for any posted information on this.

They had better have shore fishing, can you imagine how many boats could show up?   Better have pre-registration, and a Limit for boats......that could be a night mare no matter how well its run.
