That is the coolest Idea I have seen yet....

Thanks for sharing... I think you might inspire some others on your design.

Cheers!

the idea is to have hut comfort with a measure of portability
old ambulance shells are available reasonable and have a big door
and good insulation
the stoves work great and are recycled fire extinguishers
guess i have a thing for saftey lol

it also helps when you own a fabricating facilty
fyi a lot of the time spent was perfecting the stoves
wicked type sterno cans burn for 6 hours at a rate of 3000 btu per hour the trick is heat exchanging
so it doesnt go up the pipe im pretty close to capturing the max percent  of heat
and it is nice not to have to slug propane

any local tips would be appreciated, i ice fished north bay ont my whole life for pickeral(walleye)

and am not used to Alberta yet

the unit is under 600 lbs, skis are formed from light gauge sheet they also are stepped to allow for varying snow depth
of course i wouldn't want to drag  through 4 foot drifts as it will ground out but it is pwdercoated and slides really well
the Bravo is along track and i have skidded 24 inch by 30 ft logs with one back home

I'm sure stuck times are ahead but i have jacks and shovels also you can make a couple passes with bravo before the pull

thanks for the intrest i hope to see you out there

I think it looks great.  We have toyed with making some modifications to trailers/campers, etc.  This one looks first class.

Do you think that furnace would be enough at minus 25 or so for overnight?  We have a wood stove in a cargo trailer that works well, but you are a bit of a slave to the wood and it never makes a night.  Plus adding air circulation makes a huge difference.  Do you have any fans for air inside?

You really did a great job.

Cheers.

in an earlier post i mentioned alot of time went into the heaters the one on the left puts out 100F continuous
and has a 12 v microfan in the top rear the unit has an elaborate heat sink system that vortexes the flame and exhaust gas
it eventualy retains heat in the metal mass and on its own it would be a stetch on a minus 25 day by itself with the door opening and closing
but would be fine once buttoned up

The other unit is different in that i created a metal venturi that tramsmits the flame to the top surface which is 3/8 plate
this one is for additional heat on those cold days but was designed originaly to be a cooktop for a kettle or a frying pan(works great)
it has 2 low volume 12 v fans to help circulate scavenged heat

it doesnt have radiant mass so it cools off quick(but also heats up quickly)
The left unit has fresh air intake so it is fine for overnighting the real challenge was metering the air to fuel ratio so gasses secondary combust in the heat exchanger im pretty sure im getting high 80% or better efficiency all that comes out is a cool vapour
the have been tested outdoors on a minus 30 celsius day and t shirt and slippers are all you need in the fishlab(very small and tight)

the benches are designed to slide inwards towards the middle so you can curl up with a sleeping bag and fish all night in comfort

if anyone wants schematics or have me build a stove just shout
i own a  metal manufacturing company and am considering an all aluminum commercial version of this if the test flights work out lol

Thanks Fishlab, although I feel a little bit like Homer Simpson after reading your explanation.  I take it that means good (try to use your best caveman voice in your head when you say good. . .lol).

Could that heater be modified for a larger ice fishing tent?  How many of these rigs have you made so far?

Cheers.

sorry to come off all mad scientist
it should heat a fishing tent within reason
the cooktop unit with a direct vent tube and small fan setup would work as well as a small propane bottle type for sure
and it gets hot enough to cook on, i have been thinking of a dual can one that will basically double the heat

with 2 cans you will be at 50 cents per hour
nice thing is you are not inhaling the fumes from the heater

i have built 4 or 5 stoves now just to get were i am and have reworked the ones shown numerous times
i have cussed,  tore it apart ,thrown wrenches  but kept going as i think that it is a easy and clean concept
I finally figured how to capture that little blue flames energy it is amazing to have all the heat it makes from such a wimpy flame.

Awesome man, I love seeing out of the box thinking. I was actually looking at one of theses old oil patch ambulance shells at a local auction thinking it would make a nice shack, you just confirmed they do. Very nice fabrication skills, just curious what kind of fab shop you run? We have a CNC cutting/fabrication shop in Regina.

heres an inside look at a shack I put together out of an old 16 ft travel trailer 2 years ago. i stripped a few things out to lighten up and kept a few of the ammenities like the stove and sink for shore lunch, and the heater, the couch and bunk bed for the over night stays and or kids naps, I carry a small gen with me so i can route my aqua view through a 20 inch tv that sits where the fridge used to. The trailer tracks in the same tracks as the truck which helps for towability in the snow. have been thinking of selling due to not enough time to use it.

depends if you have a old fire extinguisher lol
i can but havent sold any
also I am working on a solid fuel heater of similar design, if it works out
you can just cut up some hardwood into 4 x 4 x 4 chunks
I am testing old hardwood skids as a fuel
If you want to give me more details on the requirement I can figure out one as a test for you.

I have tried various heaters for my ice fishing tents - usually propane based ranging from the small sport cats (which are good for 1 man pop up type tents) to the sunflower bigger units.  The problem is that they are bulky and I had a bad venitilation incident with my brother in law - at least I thought it was bad.  He seemed to enjoy himself once he got some oxygen back in his system.

Now I have a few big tents and a converted cargo trailer with a wood stove.  I am looking for a couple of things.  More compact heaters and ones that deliver longer use.  For example, the wood stove in the trailer is good, but at best it runs for 4-5 hours going from super hot to hot to medium hot to cold.  This requires one of us getting up in the night and getting it going again.  We generally have a couple of electric heaters, but that means running a generator all night.

I am open to your ideas. . .

Cheers.
