Well finally caught a break from work. Weather abit chilly but hooked up with RiverScum and we hit the hard water. Drilled several holes put out a few tip - ups. I started jigging for crappie & Bass while RS was trying to lure some big Gills up. Did manage to score on a few Gills and a few bucket mouths. Was a good starting day for me. Being an "essential worker" I guess I am more fortunate than others, RS in particular. I glanced over to his gear and the poor feller can't even afford a decent ice scoop. Thinking about starting a "Go Fund Me Page" for a new scoop for him.....LOL

Just a hunch, but I'd say a scooper isn't a priority, right now.
Good job on the fish, btw.
Looks like a great trip.
-
😂 i dropped my scoop through the hole! I couldnt find one local so i used myfryer scoop! Its bad ass!
-
it was a fun trip for sure. glad you finally got to go. even though it was 12* it was calm and tolerable. i think we gona have some time to catch up here at least. haha yea, i have bad habit of beating them scoops on my boot to remove ice. cold and plastic dont mix. was a fun trip even if it was only 3 and half hours.
awesome oaktree1215! i have a rusty one hanging out back! sweeeet. lol thanks
this trip allowed me to test the big bait holder rig on my polars. i been using a release for many years for this. the wire n zip tie streamlines this task a bit. i set a flag with a 5" gill and it held it. take you 3min to fab n install.

as you see in pics the treble hooks were all in the lips. that means the bait holder was setting the hook on the chomp as well. bass had no problem ripping it free and meandering off.
also found the keeper bass full of gills all sizes. they are eating flats like popcorn!!! one bass had 2 larger gills and some flats! lol they feeding heavy thats for sure.
some of the tiny gills.( the other fish carcass has nothing to do with the tiny gills. they came from the bass)

surly the reason cicadas were made. lol

Well done, I got a pile of scoops next to my pile of skis!
-
That's some good intel on fish and info on the tip - up. I might have to rig one up like that. You know I use the circle hook & bungy rig on my tip - ups.

yea and it works good too! funny to see peoples faces when that thing is rockin back n forth in the hole after a take. then your just like meandering over to pick it up lol i never seen you miss one on it yet though.
i like the free flow after the set better. that way i get to hand over hand a lot of line. get my moneys worth out of the run ya know. ;D im a tad worried about the fish wrapping the line up, since its held above the spool. im thinking if i can mount a shaft under the spool to attach it to that wouldnt be a factor anymore. just like many other things in fishing. its a tweak in never ending prosses. lol
thanks all

RiverScum and I decided on brand new water going into this blind. Fish were very tight to bottom. Most were in 15 f.o.w or deeper. Did manage to get enough for lunch.

indeed a tuff bite when you have to drill 50 holes! lol covered a lot of water for the few we tricked into biting. they wouldnt even come up 2ft hardly marked anything in the water column! cant be one after another every trip.
and thanks for the new scoop! :)

Pre-Blizzard bite.. had to hole hop but they were aggressive that is for sure. Fished about 2 hrs had limit, headed for house for a fresh fish lunch.

Fishing in the snow squaw we had this morning. Only had a few hours to get-r-done. Fish had to be enticed that's for sure. Took pic and had to release the big bass real quick, just wanted a quick pic of her. Gills were tight to bottom in about 15-18 f.o.w but did come up for the small jig.

The Dynamic Duo made it out, after I got off work. Should have left early. The first 30-45 mins was fire. Then it slowed down rather quickly. RS nailed a few nice gills to start us off. Then a school of Bass with a few crappie mingling around. Was an adventure getting down the unplowed road, about 12-20" of snow. Had the 38" tires spinning abit. Was a good time.

i know you really wanted to say "get a smaller body". ;D big n small we catchum all. no discrimination here.
should buy some of those plastic fish photo hands that were on her couple years back. lol

Well had to do it solo, RS had to do that 4 letter word (work) wind was horrible, made it hard to detect those very light bites with the spring bobber. Fishing in 22 f.o.w fish were holding 2 ft off bottom. Every now and then had a school of crappie come through about 12-14 f.o.w most were not hungry. I did manage to pick a few crappie out of the pack. Had to work for them, but got lunch.

Well kidnapped RS held him for ransom (2 containers of beemoths,2 containers spikes and new scoop) weather was daisy dukes & wife beater attire. Fish were not hungry interested in anything. Was a tough bite today. Pulled enough onto ice for lunch that's about it.

Is he crying or praying in that last photo?! Sure was warm out there today. Would have been hot without that breeze. I managed enough during the midday doldrums for a snack.

Are those golden roaches?
-
the way the bite was probably praying. lol
are you going to fry those shiners? id have kept them alive and went to skinner next day bro!!!!
-
Are those golden roaches?
I believe that's what they are called. Going to freeze them for pike bait this spring. Got into a school of them that had gills and crappie with them right under the ice. Figured I might as well save a few.
-
Still a lot better than I did yesterday. I went out for about an hour and a half after work in the afternoon and never even got a nibble.
-
Over half the fish I caught were right under the ice in anywhere from 10-20 fow. It was really hard to stay on top of them.

I fish pretty shallow water, the fish have just been really finicky this season. I am really sight oriented, so I usually struggle fishing without my house to see what is going on under me when the fish are picky. Been having to do a lot of sight jigging this winter to pick up gills, and I can't do that out in the open in the sun.
I hardly ever open ice fish, but it's too iffy to risk dropping the fish house through the ice with everything so soft now. I am guessing this afternoon will be the end of the season for me, and I'm not 100% sure I'll even be able to get out on it, because the edges were getting really bad yesterday.
-
RS had to do that 4-letter work this morning so went solo. Shorts & flip - flops. Once again tough bite. Took the Aqua-Vu to see what the deal was. 20 f.o.w tight to bottom maye 1' off. Fish came in sucked bait in and just as quick spit it out. Unbelievable. Spring bobber did not move. Toughed it out because days are few now.

It's amazing to think how many times each outing that occurs when the fish is "sitting" on your bait!!!
