Beer Can Lake (Anchorage) + Leech Jig= nice char!
« on: Jan 20, 2009, 09:03 PM »
finally got time to do some fishing....the effort paid off....this guy was sittin inside (yes its sad) a microwave oven! wouldnt get excited over anything we offered but kept watchin a certain hole to the back of us against the dock....like he was waitin for a meal....we watched him on the fish cam...finally i say hey ill try my trusty leech jig, which normally is too bigabait for this little lake....the hole he was under was about 8 feet away from our shelter, but everytime my buddy would go near it he would spook off away from the sound of him walkin ...water depth is only 4-5 feet under the ice...so what i did is gonna be hard to believe, but it worked.....that big char would come back to his microwave oven and wait there after he got over bein spooked.....so i opened the window on the shelter and casted my leech jig toward the dock hole...perfect cast...as i let it sink slowly, i was watchin the camera and as soon as he saw that lure he rushed and nailed it! fought like a champ...im proud to say this fish was released immediately after two quick photos....

Good Job JKW.   :)  Kewl story, and thanks for sharing.  Sounds to me, that if you could locate a couple submerged freezers, you might find a state record.  :roflmao:

Great tactic jkw!  Love the story...  Nice fish too!! ;)

Webice, These char would eat a eastern brookie!  I still love the brookies spawning colors a tad more than the char.  One of the most beautiful fish I'd ever caught was a brook trout in Labrador in late August on fly while it was snowing out.  Stuck in my memory bank for ever. :)

I've tried char on the grill, in the oven, and even smoked but I've never had one from the microwave. Great fishin story!

Oh I am sure!! I would love to go to labrador to catch those giant brookies.  I have read so many stories of endless rivers and lakes where 5 lbs brookies roam.  It is ok ill deal with my 2-5 lbs here for now till i get the oppurtunity, they stil taste amazing!

jkw,
Great fish! I did not think there were any that nice in that lake. You must have pretty decent fish sense.

Mike

A pic of the jig would be nice.

ok so heres the jig...its about 3 inches long...they come with just a single jig/hook....2 diff head colors...what i did was cut a slit in the tail and attach a 2 inch trailer/stinger treble thru the back end...hooks em every time, never miss a fish...you can pick both of these up at B&J's, the stinger hooks ive only seen at sportsmans once and never the leech jig there

great looking little rig, thanks for sharing

If a had leader making materials he should be able to make those stingers up pretty easily. I rigged up a few quickstrikes a couple years ago and they seemed to hold up as well as the commercial units.

I heard it's pricey up there anymore. In the best waters mostly for the rich and famous.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Not true Taxidermist!  You can DIY your trip and save some bucks...  I fished close to Labrador City with the boat and motor, then took the train across country for some real remote fishing!  Lots of big lakers, thick with nice pike, and IF YOU SEARCH you'll find the brookies in lake inlets and feeder streams that are wild and large!  Not to mention that you can find some Atl. salmon (they call Ouwanchees sp?) on the bigger rivers.  The people up there are fantastic!  Friendly and very open with information.  ;D
Didn't mean to hijack the thread jkw!  I use a similar hookup with a 3" green smelt immitation berkley gulp!  The head must be a Northland jig too?

It is pricey up there now we used to go every year when I lived in Maine. You noe have to hire a guide to take you out. Gramps went one year when you needed one and he paid 100 bucks a day per person to have this guide point him where to go. The limit is something like 20 per day in possesion. Legally you could go catch 20 take them back to camp and head out fishing again as they were no longer in your possesion. screwy regs but there are lots of trout there. Biggest I ever got was a 6+ lber is on gramps wall to this day.
