Just had my right leg go through to the hip only about three feet from where I'd drilled 4"-6" through good hard ice. New to the sport and just curious. Thanks, James

I’d be afraid if you went through with snow shoes on it would make getting out even more difficult.  If you need them because of deep snow on top of the ice is one thing, but I would definitely not use them just for questionable ice.

Acts a reminder…there’s no such thing as “safe” ice! Please be safe out there!

I second what Bhoesl posted.

If you ain't able to decipher good ice from bad, I would highly recommend you buy yerself a Spud bar. Go to the YouTube and search "Ice fishin Spud bar". You'll find lots of videos on how to use one. I'd also highly recommend you search "ice fishin safety 101". Again, lots of great videos to help expand yer knowledge of how to most safely traverse the ice.

* Also, keep yer Topic title short, then get into the real meat and potatoes in yer post. This will help alleviate any confusion and could help increase responses.

I live in MT, so when I ain't huntin, I'm fishin!
Boy the way Glenn Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days.

And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
Like Herbert Hoover again.

Didn't need no welfare state,
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days

Thanks folks. I'll do some reading and have a pair of picks before I go out again.
