Most unusual sight under the ice
« on: Dec 31, 2013, 02:03 PM »
I've been spearing for 40 years and have seen lots of stuff. The most unusual was a small mink that swam up to my red & white plastic decoy and locked onto it with four feet and claws and teeth. It stopped, then came up into my hole. One look at me and it retreated back under water. There were a couple of old abandoned beaver bank runs nearby. I believe the mink was using one for a winter den and had this access for it's under ice fishing.
What are some of your unusual experiences ??

When my oldest son was 3, we had a muskrat swim up into our spearing hole. After I spooked it away with a skimmer, my son said, "Dad, that muskrat scared the sh!t out of me!"
I guess I should have been watching my language better, lol.

I had a muskrat that kept trying to get in my house even after I gave him a couple friendly pokes with the spear. I finally got where I couldn't take it any more and picked up my house to move it. I discovered that the previous night it had burrowed between my floor and the ice and was trying to make a nest for itself.
