Is this snow going to help or hurt?
« on: Dec 22, 2012, 08:32 AM »
I'm really hoping the lakes didn't skim last night! Hoping all this snow is just cooling water temps

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the high winds prevented any freeze up :-\

The snow will help by reflecting more of the sun's rays, preventing the ground from heating up. This will lead to cooler day time temps. Also it will allow for more night time radiational cooling allowing for colder night temps. This all leads to ice formation.

Definitely help.especially after the water warm up from the rain.i would think that even places that had some ice,it would blow off.

probably depends where you live and what is lakes/ponds are doing around you. if you have ice already, probably doesn't help. if you are ice free, doesn't hurt.

i plan on open water fishing for bass on sunday. thought about going today, but a little too windy. i predict catching over a dozen largemouth on soft water come sunday. secrets later to come

Too much snow will provide a blanket of insulation preventing the cold air from penetrating through to the ice.    A few inches will have a negligible effect.
