Title: New fishing regulation proposals
Post by: Butch Moore on Oct 13, 2011, 12:30 AM
Anyone seen the new proposals yet?  They're here for those interested:

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/laws_rules/rulemaking_proposals.htm

Lots of S-4 changes proposed...48 times in fact...

I like the border water proposals.

Just did a quick looksy, but seems like nice continuation of some changes / additions there:

* Further protection of wild BKT
*  Further protection of WF
*  And we won't have to look at 7# Sebago salmon pics laying on bare ice at -10 anymore only to be "released". ::) @)

I dont think they need any restrictions on cusk.  They are plentyful were I go. And they are in competiton with the togue this would hurt the togue population in certain lakes..   :(

Anyone know what the rules in Canada are pertaining to border waters? Seems the efforts in Maine to preserve the fishery would rely on similar rules across the border?

Edit:
I didn't realize the list was so huge. Still reading it but edited this post to add that I don't particularly care for the southern counties going to artificial lures only on all lakes and ponds in October and November. What about people wanting to use worms for panfish? I will be telling everyone I know about this rule and will send off an email voicing my objection to that rule proposal change.

Cusk are native too, so protecting cusk should really be just as much of a priority as the togue!  They could provide a valuable future fishery (and are apparently gaining popularity enough to get some notice from MDIFW).  As for competing with togue to a point that they could hurt togue fisheries...I'm not buying it!  Both are native species that co-evolved in similar areas, so it is likely that some niche partitioning is going on in most places, or one of them would have out-competed the other long ago.

So much for the Sebago Derby.  If I'm reading it right, all over 23'' must be released?

The current book we have goes thru 3/31/12 so the Sebago derby people will be all set one more time if they have the derby.  Guessing the 23" thing will cause quite a debate at the public hearings but did notice that Brunswick is the closest one to Sebago so maybe not.... :-\

togue aren't native, they were stocked in the 70s.

I'm not talking about a specific body of water...lake trout ARE a species native to Maine (along with cusk), although togue are introduced in many waters where they were not native.

Being an international boarder, there has been a single line (open water) restriction, and folks who
troll want to snag more fish.
