I bought one of those tip ups you put a rod in. I rig it just like a tip up. I love fighting them on a rod, but I don't have the patients to jig them unless they are pretty actively hitting the tip ups. In that case, I like to use a nice airplane jig tipped with a minnow or a plastic.
