Hi Fisherpeople
We are holding an ice fishing derby at Blackstrap on Feb 23/19 to raise funds for a multi purpose court for the Village of Shields.
Please come out and support our derby and pancake breakfast. Trying to make this a family event so bring a new fisher!
I hope I posted the notice?

Yep, you got it posted right C.
I am registered and looking forward to breakfast and help support your multi purpose court.
Is it going to be the biggest fish takes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc? Or are you having a category for Perch, Walleye, Pike?
Will find out all the details over breakfast Saturday morning, if you don't know the answer.

I do not know how the prizes work?
I'm just a volunteer, I'm sure there is a criteria that will be defined or we are going to have a issue!

Is a Jigging JawJacker considered "electronics"???

Is a Jigging JawJacker considered "electronics"???
I believe the intent was to not have cameras, sounders and sonar?
I could be wrong.

Any update on yesterdays derby results considering the bloody cold windchill?
-
Only 1 fish caught. A whopping 2 oz Perch took the money. They drew names for the remaining places.

Was there a full house of participants?

Not 100% sure, but by the prize money paid out, it looked like they had about 120 holes sold. Lot's of people bought 2 holes. It looked like about 65 to 75 people fishing. Within 1 1/2 hours, some people started to leave. We only had light snow to start and it was miserable. It stopped snowing shortly after the start and the wind died down to 40 km's.....lol.
They had it set up in only 13 fow (counting the ice). They are going to hold it again next year, and I think they will move it out to deeper water. Be way more fun for everyone when there are fish being caught. Keep up the excitement for everyone.
I should mention that they drilled the holes the night before, and the ice chips pulled up around the hole froze hard. If they get covered with snow, and people drive over them, it is going to be one rough stretch. The area is in front of the beach and start of golf course, about 40 yards out from the shoreline. So be careful driving in that area.

Thanks for coming out to the derby, we looked around at all those folks braving the elements and decided that ice fishers are some of the toughest people we know!
Appreciate the feedback Churchill. We tried to find the old river channel and water that went from 12' to 18' at the east side. Plus we didn't want people to have to walk half way across the lake.
I think we sold about 140 holes and believe we had some really great prizes donated to the derby by some really great business's and people in the community.

Thanks Corney for confirming that we are tough.......I had to get my wife to read your post........she thought I was crazy instead of tough.
Considering it was your committees first year for the derby, the prizes were more then we expected. And had the weather been decent there would
of been a larger turn out. For us that entered the derby, we were there to help raise money for the Sport Court, so I don't think the depth of the water will keep us from coming back next year. And I am sure the committee will look at moving the fishing area. It would be nice to see Blackstrap have a derby every year and hope you keep it up, even after you raise the money needed for the Sport Court. And like all other first year attempts of anything, it will only get better in future years.
And it takes a lot of volunteers like yourself Corney, to pull something like this off. So thanks to all the volunteers.
