Has anyone tried Hayden Lake on the north end for pike yet?

I have heard that people have been fishing it for over a week now. I haven't been there myself yet.

I know there's been guys fishing from Sportsmans but that's the only location I've heard about on Hayden. I met one fella who'd been out there on New Years Eve and pulled one decent pike up then. I haven't seen it this week so I can't vouch for the ice conditions right now.

Has anyone heard much about crappie on Hayden? Hoping to make the trip over this winter.

Although it was warm for a few days, this cold snap should tighten things back up again. Maybe head out there Sunday for a little

Fished Hayden yesterday for a few hours, with no luck. The second I walked on the ice, there was a decent pike pulled from a tipup, but nothing after that.
Ice was great, very solid. I think that the warm temps melting the snow then the cold snap really solidified things.

I'd say it was 5-6 inches. Beautiful smooth ice under a light snow.

The entire north end appeared to have ice. I stayed about 100 yards off the boat launch, but almost on the horizon south of me I saw one guy with a power auger drilling holes. I'd imagine it's similar at Moskins.

Question: When you're running tip ups for pike, how are you determining depth and keeping (assuming you're using herring or perch) your bait from hitting the bottom?
I routinely dead bait for pike in the fall and spring and always use a slip bobber, but the tip up thing is somewhat new for me. Any help here?

you have two options: set the depth using a sonar 1-3' off bottom or use a lead weight attached to your hook to find the bottom, measure up your desired distance from bottom, mark the tipup line, retrieve the lead weight, put your bait on and set the tipup to the mark on your line

That's pretty much what I've been doing; only problem is the lack of the monsters under the bait!

You want to make sure that the bail is horizontal in the water. It is about hook placement and you can add a finish nail to the bait if needed

When I was out Sunday, there were only a couple of people with their tipup strings.
