first ice fish location???
« on: Oct 24, 2021, 08:36 PM »
so with not much of any snow in the forecast we may get a good freeze off the hop if temp do finally fall out- not complaining about the long fall at all.  of course thinking about the ice a bit.  where are you all thinking for first fishing trips?

prog sturgeon lake or bittern from pa here will see

still some hinting to do of course..  should prob fire up that topic as well

First trip for me is usually Tobin but it depends on weather if it's a warm fall, the ice takes too long to form where i like to start my season.

Well we are already 2 days later than my first ice trip last year.. Once we start seeing daytime highs at or below 0 ill start checking smaller waterbodies. Can usually find a couple inches a month or two before the big lakes start freezing up.

Late fall for sure, hope weather changes soon.  Most likely hiking into a small trout lake for first ice  or jigging off a hole in the ice at the end of the dock.

What is first ice like on Dief in past years? Will the north end freeze up with a few inches of walkable ice? Or is it dicey for December usually?

I've walked on inside the pump house bay by Gardiner Dam around December 20th in the past few years. It was about 3 inch of ice inside the bay and mostly open water on the main lake. Coteau Bay would ice up earlier.

Strap looks like it is starting to freeze up. Later this week we should start making good ice.

Was going to try launching one more time at Blackstrap Saturday but decided against it seeing ice on the highway cam and reports of other lakes freezing over. Ended up fishing the SSR Friday and Saturday. Friday morning the river was essentially clear in Saskatoon. Saturday I checked Clarkborough Ferry, but there was too much floating ice to fish. Ended up finding a bit less in front of the power station, still getting lines taken out by ice chunks but it was manageable. Even pulled out a couple Pike.

No highs above 0C in the forecast after today. Gonna go look for ice next weekend I think. Already seeing some pictures of people ice fishing northern trout lakes.
