Late January wader fishing
« on: Jan 30, 2017, 03:17 PM »
Made it out for a short bit today. Scouted some northern indiana lakes. Some skimmed, some barely locked up, most open. Broke out the waders and hit up a spot. Temps made fly fishing difficult. Frozen fly line, frozen eyelets, and locked up reel. Managed a few and got this beauty on my first drift with a new pattern I made. Hope everyone gets out some this month open water or hard water. I had to stop making excuses and get out and fish.

Thanks. A little chilly but if it gets around 30 and above I'll be doing a lot more of this.  Small dropper fly doing its job. It just felt good to get on some fish after a little dry spell.

Looking like I'll be spending a lot of time in my waders and not in the striker suit I purchased last week.

nice! i just started to get into fishing last year, now own a nice kayak and an ice shelter. anyone have any advice on where to fish and when in the VALPO area? this weather latley has been killing me where too much ice for a boat and too little ice to drill a hole. I have some nice insulated waders where can i use them?

You are not too far from Salt Creek if you want to get into some trout

Cohos usually start running in march sometimes check country bait one of the guys on there fishes the creeks and the ditch out in portage a lot.  The trout are still in the creek just far and few between.

Well it's not Clear since it's not stocked with trout anymore. And the Oliver Lake Chain has a marl bottom. I'm thinking Gage at the inlet?
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Check the Fishing Regs or the DNR Website, Where to fish, it details several access points for the Trail and Salt creeks not far from Valpo.
