Trapping Your Own Bait
« on: Nov 30, 2005, 11:20 AM »
Does anyone trap and keep their own bait for an extended period of time?  If so, what do you feed them in your holding tank?  I use dog food for bait, will that be good enough for them to eat after I transfer them to my big tank at home?

iv done some research on this as well and from all the info i gatherd its better to not feed ur bait, im pretty excited cus i made a homemade trap out of soda bottles and i just got my first minnow with it, its only one and hes not to big but its a start. good luck with ur trapping, o and heres a tip before u throw ur trap in throw some dog food into the water, it will bring in the minnows and then they see the food in  the trap and go for that

I use a two piece metal trap and put the dog food right in it.  I would think you have to feed them something if they're kept for any period of time.  I'm talking about keeping 5 to 6 dozen or more in a big fish tank.

Here is what I did.

http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=25822.0

Only lost two minnows.  I fed them some old tropical fish food, but when it turned cold they weren't as hungry so I stopped.

They have been in that tank since the 8th of November.

I always hear dry dog food is better, but I don't have much luck in my trap.  I caught mine in a seine.

if your  talking about trapping bait. i feel the best way to go is with a glass trap and  oatmeal or crackers. if you talking about keeping them  for a  long period of time.  i keep mine in a 55 gal drum in the river. and  feed them when i remember with oatmeal or crackers.

I trap my own, with wire/mesh traps, they are cheap about $4 ea. I use dry dog food(Just a small handfull) I keep them in a 50 gal. tank I made out of a Rubbermaid tub. I have a whisper filter and a submersable pump that runs a shower. the whole setup cost me about $60. I trap enough golden shiners in 1 week to last the entire season. I only feed them goldfish flakes (rarely) Like once a month. When the water temp is in the 30's they dont need to eat. They last all year. Anyone who Ice fishes alot really should get into trapping shiners, Its easy, fun to do,and You will save big $$, I cant say enough about how it feels to not have to pay for shiners.

i feed my bait maybe once a month maybe twice.. I givem pulvurized Krill
I have a old double utility sink in the cellar. I fillem both with spring water, they each have their own filter and  Oxygen bubblers :)
its nice and cold down there (next to old rock wall)

I keep the smelt in one sink and everything else in another
If I pick up big pike bait etc I set up a third tank for them with a rubbermaid tote with O2 and filter

changed the water 3 times last season. I lost approx. 10% of the bait we caught and or purchased. I think that was over crowding on my part...

and when all the bait was gone I brought a couple mud puppies home to live there for a few days

my wife and kids were facinated by em untill I got them out :P

can anyone recommend a affordable place to buy some LARGE pike bait? there must be a delivery service or something right?
The sooner the better.

here in ohio, the only permit you need is if you have over 500 minnows, crawfis or hellgramites, then you need a bait dealer permit.
