« on: Sep 18, 2008, 01:09 PM »
Marcum is going to have a few "High Power Challenge" ice demonstrations in Minnesota lakes this winter. Further details will be coming on these as to when and where they will be held.

I wonder if they will have vexilar there also, now that Nature vision now owns Marcum. Or maybe Nature Vision will keep Vexilar and Marcum seperate for now.
If the ice is tipping move to the center

Vexilar is a separate company and is not owned by Nature Vision. But, Nature Vision does own Marcum.

Does it really matter who has more power ?
People who have the time to screw with other fisherman because they may or may not have more power need to get something to do with them self . I don't know about you but when I go fishing that's what I'm there to do not play games with other fisherman .
Every unit made has it's place and will help improve the odds of the angler if they are used correctly and something tells me they weren't made to create interference for the anglers around you .

I am not out there to play games with others flashers, just stating a point, if they got a ton of MarCums going out there, there will be interference

WRONG !
We all know that with any electronics situation will dictate .
Were not out there to see who has the most power were out there to have a good time and catch a few fish not see who can create interference for the guy next to you .
If that's what people are out there doing they are missing the whole point of the sport .

Who says we are using Marcums to create interference?? Futhermore, I didn't make my Marcum, I wasn't the engineer, designer, etc and I didn't have any input on how much output it has. I am merely a guy that bought a Marcum, and am happy with my decision.

My point is that more power doesn't necessarily mean a better product and that situation will dictate .
Are there guy's out there that will jack the power up to create interference ....yes there are . I have seen it myself in tournaments and derbies . Again I'm not pointing fingers , I'm just saying the consumer should be better informed and fish with a couple of  buddies that may have different brands and see what they like about each one and make a decision from that not a controlled environment show .
I also like what brands of equipment that I use that's why I own them , but I don't base any decisions I make solely on an in store demo or what a salesman may say , I like to put my hands on them , ask around and see things used .

I have been around my dad, who owns a Vex FL18. Its very loud, and I like the display on my Marcum better, it seems alot more crisp than his Vex. I have yet to see the FL12 or FL20 with the flat display in use, but I stand by my Marcum.

I am going to buy the Showdown digital. Owners of Marcum and 100 bucks less with the same power and output as the Marcum. I'm not out there to interupt anyone just to catch some fish.

I am going with Zamboni on this one.

Yes power does matter, It is all about target separation! A Marcum has better target separation than a vex, I know this because I have fished both. I have an FL-8 vexilar that will loose your mark if there are too many weeds or even too many fish. Your only option to clear the clutter is to turn the gain way down, and guess what? the first thing to disapear is your jig. If the water is too shallow, you need to hook an S-cable in line. once you hook that S-cable up, you may as well go put the flasher in the pickup. Marcum not only has more power, but it makes much better use of it.

As far as marcum units being made to screw with other flashers...  ::) ::) ::)

Skipper
Target separation is the reason for more power but as I said earlier we all know situation will dictate .
I haven't ran into any time where my Vexilar wont target something and drop my jig and not correct by turning down the gain .
Then again I don't fish in anything more than about 40 feet of water or less than roughly 6 feet .
Where I'm going with the screw with you're neighbor thing is , I have witnessed people in tournaments jack their Marcum way up just to cause interference for their competitor therefore decreasing their odds of catching fish . I in now way at any point said they were made just to do that . I have used both units and they both did what I wanted them to do , but in my case I see no real reason to have the extra power because it's not necessary for my fishing conditions .
Just like you're drag racing analogy earlier sometimes more power isn't always the best thing , it all depends on the class you happen to race in .

There is a lot of confusion in regards to how MarCum units utilize the Peak to Peak power as part of its complete system performance. Let me start by stating you can not turn the power up. I think that there is a misconception that by increasing the gain you are increasing the power. In all actuality the gain control opens the receiver and increases the sensitivity. This year we will be on the ice at a number of events to showcase our Flashers. And although the schedule has not been officially set, I think you can count on Mille Lacs and Gull.

Marcum has put out a list of the lakes they will be at. For those members in Minnesota and Wisconsin, check to see if there's an event you'll be able to attend.  I was told they will have flashers from Humminbird and Vexilar there also to compare against the Marcum units. Here is the list of lakes they will be at-->  http://marcumtech.com/marcum-challenge.php
