What species would you like to target?

a good pan fish lake would be great but if it had a few pike in it that would be even better

I missed that you said southwest area. Apologies as I know the Detroit Lakes area decent enough I could point you towards some bodies of water there. However I did a search and found this list published by the MN DNR. It lists the main species and then secondary species. Hope it can make your search a little easier. Sorry I couldn't help more. Here is a good site regarding tourism in MN:
http://www.exploreminnesota.com/index.aspx

Fishing might be a bit better if you head a bit more north in MN.

Mille Lacs, Leach Lake, and Lake of the Woods are all great areas that cater to wintertime activities, ice angling, and winter tourism.

If I had to pick one spot to visit in MN for an ice angling getaway it would be Lake of the Woods.

For a few years the wife and I along with a couple of other couples had an annual trip that would take us up to McQuoids on Mille Lacs.

Good Luck.
