Milwaukee 2704 vs 2804
« on: Dec 02, 2019, 05:32 PM »
I've got the first generation (2604?) drill and was looking around for a newer higher torque model.  I see that the newer 2804 bare tool is quite a bit less expensive than the 2704 (bout 2/3 the price on Amazon).  I know the 2804 has a better side handle, but it also has a modified mode/clutch apparatus.

Has anyone compared them for ice auger use (I use a clam plate so the side handle doesn't make much difference to me)?

I've had a few instances where the 2804 models needed to be reset to drill mode.

I think every instance was when starting out for the day.  The dial would be set to drill mode, but it would have the digital clutch engaged.  Toggling back to drill mode has always worked to reset it.

So after a little research:

The 2604 (that's what I've got) has 725in/lb torque, a mechanical clutch, and separate mode and clutch rings

The 2704 jumped up to 1200in/lb torque, went to a electric clutch (stops dead instead of ratcheting at the setting) and retained separate mode and clutch rings.  It also has a larger thread on the chuck so that it doesn't directly replace the 2604 on a gen1 or gen2 clam plate.

The 2804 combines the mode and clutch rings (that's why its shorter than 2704), has electric clutch, and an improved side handle attachment.

I wish I could comment on country of origin, I suspect China for all 3.

I have the 2604 and bought a 1200 lb torque milwaukee last year in a combo just for the batteries and and I got a tremendous deal on it. I have owned the 2604 for many many years now and it still works great. In fact I am saving the 1200 lb torque drill and just use the new batteries for the 2604 just because it does the job and wont break. Unless you just want to buy I wouldnt because the 2604 works great without any hiccups. I bought a kit on clearance with 2 5ah batteries for cheaper than you could get 2 5ah batteries, just because they where repackaging that model. It helps having connections.
