Bait Dye?

Any of you guys ever use a bait dye on dead suckers or smelt through the ice? Just another gimmick or does it work to draw them in?

We're born, we live for a while, and then we die. Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Thought about it but haven't tried that... yet. If I did I'd paint 'em with food coloring and use the brine that I know and trust (salt and a little water). The salt doesn't hurt and I believe it has actually increased my success with deads since I have started using that method of preservation.

Just came across some powdered food coloring in the shop I bought, mmmm, maybe a coupla years ago. Gotta give that a whirl, supposed to be very concentrated. Came from Lorann oils.

I don’t have any in the local stores, but at the prices I saw when I looked them up, I’d only bother using them if I were fishing in a derby or tournament. I suppose you could just measure out and only use half the bottle, and just dye fewer bait at a time. For some people that only get a few dozen shiners at a time, that’s a lot of money to alter your bait per trip.

I dye my frozen baits from time to time, and when I do, I use regular liquid food coloring, in a few different colors.
Red and blue seem to be the colors that has worked for me, but, it can vary from day to day.
Some days they prefer the dyed baits other days the natural colors.
You never know until you try them all.

I tried the fire brine in orange. I dyed some shad and fresh froze them figuring they would work great for pike. Never had a nibble on them, ended up using the rest of them for catfish and even a catfish wouldnt touch it. Weird. Maybe I screwed something up in the process but it was pretty straight forward. I think I would try again, using the dye and fresh dead shiners.
