does anyone knows how the ice is at moosehead, nevermind the middle but are the coves safe?  I usually fish the lower half near beaver cove

No good ice on Saturday and unlikely to have improved.  About 7" of ice on the smaller ponds in the area.

Jim, were you able to get on Prong or do you know if it is safe?

I have a friend in Greenville, and he says that people were putting out shacks at the town landing
yesterday, and it was open water the day before. Riding snowmobiles and all. One does it and the
rest think it is safe. Natural selection working at its best.

Yes, that is where we fished.  About 7" of ice for the most part on Saturday.  One very nasty spot well down the pond off a creek mouth that extends out to an island.

Thanx Jim, I'm headed up there over the long MLK weekend. Hopefully there will be as much if not more ice on Prong and a couple other small ponds.

Good luck!  It's supposed to get cold again next week, so your timing should be good.  Last Saturday was my first trip there and I liked the spot.
