« on: Mar 22, 2019, 10:03 AM »
This is the first of four batches of a new recipe for brined smelts. These are 21 days old.

Bob, Thats some good looking bait. I think the brine will firm them up so they don’t get mushy. I have bought some frozen from the bait shops that don’t hold up after they thaw out. Probably not brined that’s why. Yours sewn on a hook will troll nice.

Those look great Bob! Let me get my needle!
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

Those came out nice Glen. I have three more batches working.

I just noticed, what's that poor Tommy Cod doing in there?

I did that last year with great results. Lots of salt and baking soda. http://www.lakemichiganangler.com/tips/general/how_to_make_salted_minnows.htm

That reminds me, need to tie up more slider rigs too.

That's nice looking bait.
If you fish the wrong lure long and hard enough it will eventually become the right lure!

I got thinking.....if you ate one of those smelts, you'd set a record for getting down off a pole and looking for a one holer, or as Fred Sanford would say "you'd have to change your drawers"  ;D ;D ;D

Nice work! I vac packed my "Frankenbait" herring, a pile of shiners, salted fresh shrimp and some marinated hot dogs and popped 'em in the freezer for next season. I wish bait that size was more available here. It's either 12 - 15" or 5 - 8" with not very much in that 9 - 12" range that I like the most. Maybe I'll have to look more diligently during the off season OR get out and target some ciscoes before ice up. Plenty of opportunities for that in the north of WI.

I really miss the smelt and bloater chubs (even more) from Lake Michigan. Gotta roll with the times.

Again, nice catch and great work at preserving quality bait for the coming season!
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!
