Being I use tip-ups my go to bait is the fathead. I have had some great days with them. I do have some jigging rods but never seem to get them out. After reading what others use maybe I will give it an honest try this year.

Newbi here and last year used a swedish pimple and it worked really well. Wondering what spikes are? Also what is a good starter selection of bait?

FRINEER SPIKES ARE MAGGOTS . GOOD CHOICE WITH SWEDISH PIMPLE ITS MY PREFERANCE TOO I LIKE TO SWITCH THE HOOKS FROM TREBLE TO THE SINGLE ALOT OF TIMES ESPECIALLY WITH MINNOWS.

Another vote for the pimple. Like to tip mine with a minnow head. Its my go to bait when I start fishing any hole. If they're active, they will swarm right in on it.

use a combination of things. minnows, maggots, meal worms, butter worms. the thing that has helped me the most over the last couple years is using a spring bobber when jigging live bait

Fathead Minnows on a tip up. Simple spoon with a wax worm or two on a rod seems to work.

Usually wax worms on a simple jighead. I have tried spikes but find it too hard to handle the tiny little buggers, especially when my old fingers are cold. Usually fathead minnows on my tip ups.

Wax worms on a demon jig. Works for just about anything. Never had much luck with spikes.

I always go with the smallest teardrop jig that I have and add 2 maggots . Seems to do the trick

Teardrop and a waxworm will catch anything in the lake. Creek chubs on deadsticks is a close second
