Oak Leaf Grubs
« on: Dec 29, 2022, 09:50 PM »
Did anyone pick any Oak Leaf grubs this Fall?  I spent about 3 hours in my favorite stream in the woods on a late Fall weekend and was able to find 350 nice size grubs.  You have to wait till late Fall so the Oak Leaf grubs get about 3/4" to 1" long.  Too early the grubs are too small.  Too late the stream is frozen.

Trapp I kept them in wet leaves  (right from where I found them) in the old fridg at about 45*  They stayed well but as I said before I don't think they're worth the bother.  I'll take spikes.    Even with that said, I think with this weather you may be able to get some now  Just paw up some oak leaves where they settle in the slow moving steams and look thru the leaves

It's illegal in most waters now to dig lampreys. But a great bait.

I can understand why it would be illegal   I've been fishing Champlain for a few weeks and some of the lakers we have caught are a mess

From the guide:   I'm assuming lamprey larvae are what they are talking about but....for what its worth anyway.....

Species Prohibited for Use as Bait
Carp, goldfish, lamprey larvae, round goby, European rudd as well as species listed as endangered or threatened in New York State may not be used for bait.
