Long Lake (Alpena, MI)
« on: Dec 10, 2007, 11:20 AM »
I just got back from Long Lake and there is safe ice at the north end in the area the locals call Silver Weeds. there is about 5" of snow-covered ice and fisherman have been going out there with snowmobiles, quads and six-wheelers. The bite has been spotty so far, but I plan to fish an area of the lake on Friday that hasn't received any fishing pressure yet.
I am blessed to live in an area where the fishing is great and the people are nice!

Straight out from the DNR Launch on Mar-Ral about 1/4 mile in 18 to 20 feet of water. It was quite productive last winter.

I never got to the Silver Weeds last year, because we always caught fish in this area.

I plan to fish there on Friday, but I won't be able to stay as long as I would like . . . the wife has us booked for attending a Christmas Party. Last year we got perch and pike earlier in the afternoon and walleyes just as the sun was going down.

Slimechaser . . . you must be talking about some other Long Lake. I have fished this lake for about 30 years and never have caught a sunfish!

Since when is a sun fish and blue gill the same fish? I am usually fishing for walleye and only catch panfish by accident, but if I do catch a panfish on this lake, it is usually a perch. The bass population is also plentiful in this lake.

My long anticipated trip onto the ice had to be put on hold again. Woke up to 30 mph winds and that does not make for fun fishing. Sometimes it seems that the Lord knows when I plan to go fishing and changes the weather to punish me for something I did or should have done. Oh well, I will give it another try tomorrow morning!

Finally got out on the ice today and it was wonderful. I wasn't able to fish as long as I wanted or when I wanted (I have to work tonight), we we caught 5 nice perch with the smallest being about 9 1/2" and the biggest almost 13". ;D
