Title: CT Outfitters 5th annual season long tournament
Post by: Blaine on Dec 07, 2010, 12:51 PM
Here we go again!   ;D

For those of you that don't already know, CT Outfitters has kicked off its annual season long, statewide ice tournament. We have tons of great prizes again this year, and once again, the Grand Prize is a Frabill Trekker shanty.

As long as they meet the minimum length requirements, you may enter as many fish as you like. Each fish entered gets you another entry for the Grand Prize drawing.

Details, rules and leader board can be found on our web site.

Let the games begin!

Doesn't matter where you live... As long as it was legally caught through the ice in CT, we'll accept it. Seth spends quite a bit of time here in CT ;)

I'm seeing that. How about bribing him into doing an ice pike seminar. ;)

I think people from Massachusetts shouldn't be allowed to enter fish into the pike category. Because of them and those dirty jersey people there won't be any prizes left for people who actually live in CT!

We aren't concerned, especially if you bought an out of state fishing license. You aren't winning, you're recovering.  :o  ;D

Bad news: That's a heckuva start in the LMB category.
Good News: There's still have roughly 11 weeks to do better.

As long as the fish meets the minimum length, it doesn't matter if you're on the leader board or not... Every time you enter a fish, you get another entry for the grand prize drawing.  ;)

It was the first weekend of ice, I didn't want to insult him by asking  ;) If word got out, the place would have been pounded for the rest of the season...

Just a reminder guys... Even if your fish doesn't make the leader board, you can still enter it as long as it meets the minimum length requirement for that category. Every time you enter a fish, you get another entry into the grand prize drawing at the end of the tourney. The more fish you enter, the better your chances... There are plenty of fish being caught here in the reports, why not take a shot at winning a shanty?  ;D

Hey Blaine,
Just an Idea for next season, How about adding catogories for pickerel, say 24", if a pickerel is bigger enough to be a keeper river pike thats not to shabby.
One for catfish, around 18", thats a heavier and better fighter then any walleye that size. Plus it will raise interest in the DEP's relatively new channel cat stocking program, esp for urban areas.
And maybe include a sunfish catogory, or lump perch, crappie, and sunfish into a panfish group, with the same 12" minimum.

Again just something to mull over, the prospect of entering a keeper walleye into the tournament gave me a goal, and kept me out on the ice so much this year, though im still hoping to pull out an 18" bass in the final week to be able to enter something.

Times are tough and the manufactures don't want to donate as much as they have in the past. Because of this, we removed some categories from the tournament this year because we couldn't come up with enough prizes... Stripers and cats were cut in favor of categories that had more participation.

To be honest, I'm not sure that we will be doing the tournament next year in it's current form. Because the big companies are donating the prizes, they want to know that their generousity is getting them some play and rightly so. I spend lots of time on the phone and emailing people soliciting a total of 18 different prizes (1st, 2nd and 3rd place for 6 species). Many guys have caught big fish this winter but are waiting till the last minute to enter fish. I have no idea why guys do this. It looks bad... We depend on the entries AND photos on our website to show the sponsors of the tournament that there is lots of participation and excitement generated by their donations. The tournament ends next weekend and we still have no official pike entries, the trout and walleye slots were filled just in the last 10 days. I know for a fact there are plenty of big pike and walleye entries coming in at the end of the week. That does the tournament no good, it just doesn't look good when guys sand bag.

If you were Frabill, Humminbird, Daiwa, etc and you committed to donating prizes, what would you think if you check our site leader board every week and see empty slots for 3/4 of the tournament? It's going to make it very difficult to get them to donate again... It will be unfortunate if we have to end the tourney, it was a very unique format. We're going to take some time and think it through. We may do it again, we may have to scrap it and do something different.

Blaine, have you considered allowing entries to be submitted by email? I know I personally would have entered both pike and walleye, but the 1+ hour drive to the shop (more for some CT guys) can be a deterrent. I know that requiring in-person submissions gets people into the shop which is good for business, but if e-mail submissions means more interest in the tournament and more entries to display, maybe it could work out? just a thought.
