Title: FL-8 fishfinder
Post by: abishop on Feb 11, 2019, 11:29 AM
I have a friend who has one and hasn't used it in years. I am sure it needs a new battery. It should be worth 50 bucks. What do u think???

Worth at least 150, new battery is less than 20 bucks.  It's hard to find a used one for under 200.  It happens but not very often.

One of these days we'll all have something like livescope but not till the technology comes down in price for most.  I don't have 2K laying around for a locator or I would have one.

Livescope technology is awesome to say the least but personally I want the technology to get physically smaller. I'm tired of lugging around what I have now. All the junk associated with the Livescope is too much. When you are a hole hopper like myself, less is more. I know panoptix technology should make hole hopping a thing of the past but tell that to perch that won't sit still for 30 seconds let alone the time it takes to setup all that stuff associated with the cutting edge sonar units of today.

I want an extremely accurate flasher style unit that is the size of a large wrist watch that can be worn paired with a small transducer that is on a recoil style holder. Better yet make the transducer in a contained floating unit with bluetooth to the unit. Of course the bluetooth connection needs to provide instant read out with no lag or degradation of signal. Yes, I know they have similar things now but how long will your cell phone last in 5 degree weather and reports of lag are the norm.

Technology is nice and I am guilty of using some of the new stuff out there but I never had trouble catching fish before it. As the years go on fishing just gets more expensive LOL

I hear ya with all the junk.  Hardly ever use my camera and it fits inside the chest pocket of my Striker coat.  I have my vex mounted to my bucket on a homemade hole hopper bracket.  All I want to do when I'm out there is stick and move!

I agree the livescope looks awesome, but the size of it has kept me from seriously considering buying it just yet.  I would assume that with time they will be able to condense that thing down a bit.

He ended up giving it to me. It has 2 transducers as well. Also he gave me a old lowrance type flasher think it is a hummingbird. All I need is a couple 6 volt batteries and one for the vexilar. I already have one but my son needs 1. Couldn't  say NO.

Once you take the plunge and start using electronics, there is no going back. I will not fish without my Vex! That's a good friend you have to give it to you.

I have the 18. Only wish it worked good in 4 fow. I fish the slough a lot and dont use it in shallow water. I know fishing deeper bodies of water I won't fish without it. Has improved my catching 4 to 1.

Did you try the suppressor cable for the shallow water?  I have one for my FL8 and it works.

the suppression cable cuts the power in half like adding low power mode to the fl8se.less blobby screen in shallow water.

Real shallow water ....i REMEMBER i DID HAVE THE 8 BEFORE i GOT THE 18 AND i DID HAVE THE CABLE. iF i REMEMBER THE CABLE REMOVES SOME OF THE CLUTTER. I NEVER NOTICED MUST DIFFERENCE OTHER THAN THE GOUGE IT TOOK OUT OF MY WALLETT. 4 THE 20 BUCKS IMHO IS WASNT WORTH IT. WISH THEY WOULD IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY SO THESE FINDERS WILL WORK IN THE SHALLOW WATER. GUESS YOU COULD SITE FISH. I COULD BRING MY AQUA VIEW IF I WANT TO C IN SHALLOW WATER.

I had one of them when they first came out and they were 129.00. Think they worked just as good as these high tech ones for 500.

Anyone that fishes shallow wAter with a fl8 should have the s cable.imo.instead of a cluttered blobby screen with gain at zero, you will have a decent fading green line mark for the jig with gain turned a quarter to half a turn.

Sorry  just couldn't fish without mine.  I would go crazy not know if there were fish down there,  not knowing if they were active fish, and not knowing if they are suspended way up the water column.

One lake I was on this year the crappie were 2-3 feet under the ice in 7-13 fow.  Most likely would have never know they were around without a flasher.   Many times i find active gills suspended way up the water column also.

I'm all for keeping it simple but I don't want no part of sitting on a bucket all day wondering why I can't catch s fish.  Drive me absolutely crazy,  same reason my 2 msn shanty is still sitting up on a 12' shelf in the barn I guess.

Hey Roe,
We need to hook up. I use 5' rods and work the water column constantly. Sat next to a guy at Slough and he had everything, all the gear!! He couldn't buy a bite. I was catching gills pretty steady. He wanted to know where my locator was? I was using a blood worm jig I tied and a red wedgee! Couldn"t believe I didn't have live bait? He finally moved! ;D
I just keep moving 'til I find them. Not always but I catch a few! Whatever blows your skirt!!

In my younger years, we caught tons of fish without electronics. It was drill a hole, fish the entire water column...move and repeat.

With that said, if I was 2 hours into a drive on a fishing trip and realized I left my unit at home, well, my wife would question me over the $400 + charge on my debit card!

I've had one go down on the ice, off to the closet shop I went.  Always talked about a backup but still don't have one.  Can't stand maintaining things that sit idle!  Put plates, tires, and batteries on too much crap now.

Would love to fish with you teach!  I'm sure I would learn plenty.  One of my buddies I fish with is around 80.  He's old school but also has moved to a vex and drill auger.  Most times he out fishes me, mainly with patience.   I'll be hole hoping like a monkey and he will be staring the spring off the end of his pole just pounding away.

He went to Florida this year,  miss fishing with him almost as much as he misses the ice!

I never looked at a flasher running the s cord.  but I have only had a flasher the last 2 or 3 yrs myself.  ill have to search some videos showing the difference. some make it sound like a must have.

The newer ones have it built into the unit. I think just the fl-8 is the only one that the cable is needed. I called and they said the 18 had it built in. I sold my cable when I got rid of my 8 but thinking I may need 1 for my 18 got me wondering if I should keep the cable for my 18. Vexilar told me it was built in. Just something else I don't need.

Haha... like 2 weeks ago when I was an hr and a half from home and forgot my bibs... shot into a store and spent 60 on a pair of off brand ski bibs....would fish without my vex no sooner that no boots.
