Alton still safe for small truck?
« on: Feb 27, 2018, 09:07 PM »
I plan to head up this weekend and I'm trying to figure out how and where to fish. Alton in Wolfboro have been very safe for my Tacoma but with the weather I'm wondering if I should rule it out.   Obviously I would check as I go. Thinking about getting a four wheeler for the rest of the season also.

I wouldn’t! Edges aren’t the best, a 4 wheeler is your best bet.

  • If I can hunt it, or fish it....I'M THERE!

X2....I wouldn't!  From what I saw it's too inconsistent to be safe with a vehicle. And even with a wheeler, watch out for holes. I drove right by one that would have swallowed mine the other day.

Saw the same thing yesterday but I'm glad I had it.

I wouldn't especially on Winni maybe First Lake. How big is the small truck?

Tacoma...think I'll play it safe with the weather friday and hoof it. Start getting the boat ready instead of shelling out for an ATV to extend the season.

Good move if there is snow you will not be able to see the soft spots (old holes, old bobhouse spots) and my guess is there are quite a few there. Roccus and I were out yesterday with the wheelers and if there was snow on the ice there was no way we would have took them out. Good luck.

Definitely not a good idea. Hoofed it out to the bobhouse Saturday night because it was dark. Was tempted to drive my s10 out Sunday morning to pull off but decided against it after drilling more than a dozen holes. Still 12-14" in some spots but the ice is weak and full of air and the shoreline is getting thin. Finally got my bobhouse off last night with the 4 wheeler

Good luck! Be careful out there.

Shores are pretty much the weak areas you will first encounter.

If you can't get on the ice you'll definitely not get off the ice!

Even sleds and ATV's are at risk!

I would go with foot power.

Agreed. I want to try out my frabill flip over and a windy raw day seems like a good time to do it.

I am quite sure I wouldn't be running a truck on any ice at this point in the season and going forward, with the recent weather...!
