I use a 6" for everything. I've squeezed plenty of decent pike and trout through a 6" hole.
What I've noticed and this is just my own experiencethe last few years fishing Schroon. Schroon can be great at 1st ice. After a week or 2 the action just dies.
I did fairly well this past week, but I'll be heading to LG this weekend knowing those common spots on Schroon are going to be a zoo and the fishing is going to shut right down. I'm curious to know if that trend holds true for some of you regulars that fish it throughout the year.

question is why would anyone use a 6 inch hole ? If fishing for pike.
Probably because he wasn't pike fishing and there wasn't enough ice to warrant dragging out the power auger. The fish was also caught on a jig rod not a tip up.

So they don't have to go to the gym to workout their shoulders??    ;D

Exactly ship, the 6" cuts so much easier and we have put a 40" through .
Even with th almost 3 feet of ice last year I still used the 6" nils. It was a little tougher though pulling them through that deep tunnel .

The reason I took friday off!  To hammer em before they've seen every lure made.  Even on Saturday the lakers seemed waaaay less suicidal then on Friday, like: "whoa whoa whoa them hooks are sharp".
Or: "hey! That's just a hunk of metal painted pretty".

Jamey I also use a 6" auger for most everything.Only drag the power auger out when there is alot of ice.I agree on Schroon being productive the first couple weeks of the season and then they slow down.I think the added pressure that has been put on the lake the last few years has attributed to some of this also.It is a fairly small lake with limited access and everyone seems to bunch up in the same spots.

I wouldn't go near the narrows or eagle this past weekend , they were packed.
The north end was pretty barren

That's it right there. The chasers start becoming lookers.
It's absolutely maddening after having a solid day of fishing to return the next week and the switch has been flipped off.
I can start big and fast and get them my 1st trip out. Switch to small and slow the 2nd and 3rd trips and then I get lost. Can't figure them out so I move onto LG.
Thankfully for some of us the timing works out well when LG freezes.
Another beautiful thing I've noticed. It all seems to coincide with once it hits the forums and all of the Facebook pages. Once it has, the fun on Schroon is over for the year. This is where and when it pays to put in your time and effort for that early ice bite.

I agree with you jigstick... I as well made it up there Friday, and it was non stop action. I only had to cut 1 hole and I didn't go 15 minutes without at least seeing a fish. It was actually the best I have seen in the 3 years that I have been able to fish Schroon. I went back today for for about 5 hours and noticed that there where about a dozen holes cut at or reasonably near by where I was fishing Friday. Today I didn't see a single fish there. I moved around a bit and managed to catch 4, but I had to work for them. 1 of them had some really nice color to it.[/URL]

On a side note: schrnlkr or anybody else...do you think the whole lake is safe to walk across now? I'd like to venture to new areas.

I would assume so just be aware of the moving waters in the mouth of the river where the truck went in last yr. I plan on covering a little more ground away from the crowds. It's always nice to be able to find new spots. Got a little advise on a few different spots that sound like a good bet. But with 1 fish swimming by 100 lines before it sees your line it's kinda like last season once lg went everybody piled up just outside of sawmill. Great the first trip but then word got out and shut right down.

Yes, I think it is all safe, just be aware of cracks and the usual soft areas, in front of brooks, north end is notorious for spots opening up without warning.  It's been very cold, with way below zero this week, and hardly any snow to insulate, you're good to go.

A solid action shot my sister in law took and edited from Sunday's fishing on Schroon.

You know what?! It might have been! Hahahaha.
The only time it's ever happened to me: I had a trout at the hole and tried lifting him just a tad too high by the rod with my face right over the hole. The pimple came loose and stuck right in my lip. The fish hit the ice and slid back down the hole. I'm counting that in my numbers man!

Where are the access points on Schroon? I have never fished it before and need a little direction for access and best areas for Landlocked and Lakers and some perch.

Eagle point state campground - you have to park at the top and walk down as the roads do not get plowed.
Narrows restaurant allows parking for access to the lake.
The Town beach on the north end.

Well I have a bunch of buddies going to saratoga to fish the creek. A- I have never fished there.
B- I'm only assuming that they are going to catch panfish, and who knows if they are biting.
Or I have another buddy heading to Lake George for some perch.
A- Caught enough there last weekend for a good 3 meals for my family and I.
And I just bought a new laker rod earlier this week....choices....cho ices
