one treble or two for big pike?
« on: Mar 10, 2011, 05:34 PM »
Hey guys-  looking for a little advice. For guys that regularily catch pike over 40 inches, do you use one treble or two? Also what size? I've been using 2 number 4 trebles but im thinking about switching to a single treble....any opinions?

Single size 4 Gamakatsu EWG treble. Really no need for a quick strike...if the fish doesn't have the hook that just means its a small fish. I like to run my hook behind the dorsal for dead baits, hanging them nose down. Its a good presentation and it also makes gut hooks (and bite offs) less likely as they almost always take it head first. This was my first season trying this method and it was my best season to date.

Well, guys, on many of our lakes single barbless hooks have been the law for about fifteen years now.  Most of us were quite surprised with how few fish we lost when we started using them.

Especially with really big pike, it is much easier to release them with single barbless.

I agree with fondofishin about the gamakatsu trebles. I started using these a few years ago and now I won't use anything else. I fish single trebles  but bump up to a quick strike rig when fishing larger suckers (8-10" or larger). I would also recommend giving flourocarbon a chance if you havn't already. I started switching over about 5 years ago and won't use anything else now. I've had real good luck with 50lb tied up with #2, #4, or #6 gamakatsus (depending on the size of the sucker). I've landed (and seen friends land) many larger pike on this rig with many over 40" and I have never once had a break off
