St. Croix spring bobber/ grommet
« on: Nov 21, 2010, 04:19 PM »
I know this came up in the past, but I don't feel like searching through all these threads for it. I'm slowly getting my jigging rods in order, and noticed the rubber grommet on my St. Croix Legend was cracked, and the spring was loose. Is my best bet just checking the local hardware store for something close, or should I try to order one somewhere? Any help appreciated.

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

I used a 5/16" OD by 1/8" ID rubber grommet that we had in the parts bins at the shop I work at.  I didn't have the Legend rod, so I also used a 8mm regular guide with the ceramic insert knocked out of it and the grommet fit perfectly....used shrink wrap tubing to attach it to the rod I put it on...it works great......Van, what color indicator do you use on yours?

Topher has the right idea.

Before you go the DIY route, you may want to call Saint Croix and see what they could do for you.

Maybe they have the right size parts that would keep the modifications down.

that's just how I did mine....I'm thrifty so to speak....7 bucks plus shipping for the indicator was a little expensive....definatel y check with St. Croix first though, like Wiener said...

There are a couple good hardware stores I go by anyway, so I'll start there; I get irked by high shipping charges as well. I'm pretty handy as a rule, and have built a few rods, so I can probably come up with something. Topher, I am using the orange; I believe it is the lightest. That is one of my finesse rods, so it is usually is rigged 2# test and very light jigs.

Thanks chris, I solved the problem. Drove down to see my boss who paid me in cash, and directed me to the old school hardware store we had visited before. Found what turned out to be nearly exactly the same size as the stock grommets. Picked up four for less than a buck, and have the spring reinstalled. Rod is rigged and ready; a gold no.14 marmyshka waiting for action. ;D

I usually go with the method they show on the package; just a basic snell or uni knot. Not too hard, except if your hands are frozen! You can always practice by snelling some hooks. That style of knot gives the lure a nice angled presentation. I pre rig several rods anyway, so I don't often have to try that one on the ice.

I bought some of those last year....had a bugger of a time tying them on....never got through all the other lures I had pre-rigged to even try one...I think I will this year though.
