China Lake...pics/report added
« on: Mar 05, 2009, 09:46 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking to try China on the 14th.  Never fished that area before.  Got some new tip-ups and going to break them in on togue(hopefully).  Looking for the closest bait shop to China that has live smelt.  Or if you know a place that sells dead ones (that's what I had to do next to little sebago this year...seafood joint next to the boat launch road)

Thanks in advance for the bait shop info.

Hopefully report with pics to follow...

China Lake..... Lets see some fish tales.... I've fished this lake since early 80"s, Caught many a fish there,Togue, salmon( yes Salmon)Lg.Pickeral(5 +Lb. my best) & lost big ones too!! lake has been very slow for me lately, even for my kids in the summer. They used to catch bucketfulls of sunfish & a occasionally Lg Mouth bass off the dock, last few years only white perch in the evenings. In the spring & can usually catch a trout in the Basin if I tie the smelt on correctly :D.. Is it me,my bait? anybody else have similar stories??
Always,take the kids

Ive fished there for over 15 years. Its garbage. The water quality is so bad it looks like Arizona Iced Tea. The coldwater gamefish in that lake are put and take only from the IF&W. Fishing is always slow no matter what your fishing for, even pickeral or bass. Head somewhere else.

Twenty years ago, a small racer Togue was a rarity. Would not waste my time there, water quality is tanked. Head up the road to Sheepscot for Togue.

it's to bad because that is such a big lake with easy access and all kinds of structure for fish to live on.

Well here is my story...

3 guys fishing Sat & Sun with 15 traps out each location, smelt for bait.  Ice at all locations where we fished was 18"+.

I took everyones advise and fished Saturday morning on Sheepscot Pond.  Got the big skunk.  Had sled trouble so had to fish shallow...not where I wanted to be.  0 flags.

Packed up around noon and reset on China Lake for the evening bite.  Ended up with 5 ylw perch, 1 wht perch and 1 good pickrel.  15 total flags.

Went to Embden Pond on Sunday...5 Togue and some great snowmobiling for our efforts.  Finally got to fish deep and connected with some 12-17 inch Togue.  All fish were taken on the deep traps set in 70 feet with smelt.  9 total flags.

Very pleased with the "Big Bob's"

There is a saying about "You can pick your friends..."  I need help in this department.  Check out this outfit that my buddy had on.  In his defense...it was downright HOT on Sunday...I thought it was T-shirt weather, my buddy thought differently.  Yes, he is a "tool".
