My "HutMut" is layed up for a while
« on: Jan 14, 2006, 06:28 AM »
On Thursday afternoon, the fiance and I took the dog to the town park.  The dog ended up jumping in the creek (nothing out of the ordinary).  He was running up the creek and let out a loud yip.  When he turned around, I could see the blood gushing out of his paw.  I jumped in the creek and scooped him up.  When I got to shore, I could see the bone and tendons in his paw.  I quickly ripped the string off of my hooded sweatshirt and made a tourniquet.  I then took my socks off and wrapped his paw.  After getting him wrapped up, I had to carry him (a 70lb lab) 3/4 of a mile out of the woods.  $600 later and one wild ride to the vets he is going to be O.K.  He ended up cutting one tendon and losing 75% of the surface skin on his one pad and 25% of the tissue underneath the skin on that same pad.  He was very lucky and missed the main artery and major tendons in his paw.  He should be laid up 1-2 months.

Poor guy, Seeing your pet in pain is just like seeing your loved one in pain. One in the same. If he did'nt realize how much you loved him before he sure does now ;D. My wife and i are actually looking to get a Lab Pup now. Nothing like having a best friend around all the time. Utes

Thanks guys.

Mac,  This is actually the second incident he has had like this.  Two years ago he sliced one of his back paws open at my fathers.  He ran up on the deck and cut his foot on a stone that was stuck between the boards in the deck.  This dog is an accident waiting for a place to happen.  That is the only problem with young labs, they do everything at 90 miles an hour with no fear.

Glad your dog is OK. I know I love my dog like a child. I had to put my basset hound down and cried for 3 days.
Eventually, another dog found me. (Working road construction) Called the police and they took the dog, but I gave the cop my info. in case he couldn't locate owner. He found the owner and they said if I wanted the dog I could have him, they had 5 other dogs. Cop came back 4 hrs. later and gave Slim to me. Dogs name was Slim. 29 pound beagle.
Great dog too, very friendly 5 year old. Didn't go to work looking for a dog but came home with one.
Wife was very angry, so when we arrived home I told Slim he'd better do something cute. So he found my wife in the livingroom and stuck his nose at my wifes nose(who was laying on the couch) and that sealed the deal.
Its her dog now, but Slim has us both trained well.

I can sympathize, my buddy got tangled up with a snapping turtle a few years ago while retrieving a duck decoy.  Glad everything is okay.

Fishboy,

The vet seems to think it was a stick or a piece of glass.  I never went back to check.  He had a check up today and the vet said it is healing way ahead of schedule.  He will get the stitches out in 2 weeks.  He will still be bandaged up for at least three weeks.

Glad to hear it Gambell... animals are funny that way!
I only have 2 dogs now... but have had an extensive list of pets and when they are hurt or sick, it always seems like they heal alot quicker than we normally would!... with our help and love of course!
