I keep in touch with a couple uncles in the Bemidji area. They still don't even have that much ice up there, 12-15" on most lakes. That is nothing for January.

Never tried it yet but if I do fish for pike I am going to try hot dogs. northern pike suckers are now over $8 a dozen.

In CT they get a couple bucks each for suckers or big shiners.   Glad I'll be armed with hot dogs if I go.

At least $8.50 a dozen and you are lucky if they give you 13. And by the time you get home one or two are already dead.

Hot doggin' it is pretty popular way for catfishin'. I think the bigger the fish, the less picky about anything they eat. Who hasn't seen vids of big pike gulp down baby ducks?

I only eat the beef ones so that's all we buy but they are pricier then the generic ones with chicken lips and various pig parts in them.

I am thinking the deer sticks I have made, nice tough outside coating to hold it on the hook better.

Yes makes some pike decoys with fins and tails cut from beer cans with a weight shoved right in the weiner....

So I have never tried using a hot dog before. until last weekend after reading the post. So I took a pack of bar s with me. To my surprise I got a flag and got a pike bout 4 lbs. was in the water bout 20 minutes. I was surprised to say the least. Went to get another dog and my oldest son had eaten them! I will definitely try them bar s Dogs again
