Red pickerel or red eye pickerel
« on: Dec 10, 2005, 11:23 AM »
Hi I was at the local bait shop here in RI and was talking about the Blue pike. They did here of them and all of the older guys at the shop said that there are Red Pickerel I had never heard of them until then. Some claim they had got them here in RI years ago. Anyone ever hear of these fish or get one.

In New York you can find these in many lakes.  When I was a kid I found them in a slow moving stream by my house.  My grandfather knew exactly what they were.  I was excited thinking that I had caught a small pike.

Years ago i caught the most beautiful fish i have ever seen between Greenwich and Cambridge N.Y.
I looked eveywhere to ID this thing but couldn't really find a accurate picture. About 5 years late in a magazine article about rare NY fish there it was! It was about 17'' long and the most beautiful green-blue color with fire red eyes. The name was ''grass pickeral''.
I still cant find a fish that looked like that one. Wish i had taken a picture :(
If it has red fins its a redfin pickeral.
Hope this helps

Grass Pickerel and I believe Redfin Pickerel have fire red eyes. Locally abundant, overall rare. Interesting little fish, I'd love to catch one someday. :)

I know of a couple small ponds and streams here in the southern adirondacks with grass pickerel, they are beauty little fish and great fun on ultralite gear
