Why protect the salmon?
« on: Feb 12, 2021, 09:42 PM »
 ??? ::)

Fished a lake in Maine today where they want people to kill all small Lakers because in their opinion they’ve overpopulated and taken over the salmon fishery.

Fisheries change. What was good for one fish species may be a downfall for another all the way down to the smallest. Maybe some lakes are better suited for other fish then salmon nowadays for a multitude of reasons.

So what’s the big deal with protecting salmon? Would like to hear opinions on pro/cons. Is it just trying to protect the rich summer home peoples trolling experience?

Just make a few new fish hatchery’s and stock more fish! It’s going to have to happen eventually anyway. I’d like to see how much $ each states f&g puts into stocking salmon vs what they take in annually.

Because Salmon bring in way more tourist dollars than Lakers as noted by their yearly angler surveys.

Exactly. Tourists with boats are worth more than tourists with pack baskets.

Think of the tourists we'd bring in if we had a loon season
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day teach him how to fish and he will sit there and drink all day!!
