I have an older (non-folding) 8" mora and a 10" Jiffy Stealth for when the ice gets real thick.  I have to agree, for thinner ice, the benefits of carrying the hand auger (lighter weight) outweigh lugging the Jiffy around (40 lbs).  However, I am buying a new 6" Mora with the folding handle just for my jigging excursions.  I can still cut a foot of ice easily enough and it will still keep my sled light.

Take care of those blades.  Don't use the auger as a walking stick.

My first hole ever made was with a small hand sized pick ax  >:(  That night I bought a 8" mora hand auger!!  I have two sets of blades, and I swap halfway through the season and get the dull set sharpend

don't let anyone bang it on the ice. Or drill through shallow spots to hit dirt. That happen to me screwed up my blades

Bad blades = long bad day on ice.  Put the cap back on when done/transporting and don't bang them on the ice.

I agree... my blades weren't sharp for a while and it was like a jack hammer.. you have to practically lay on the thing to get it to move down.

Another thing to watch out for is how you handle the augers.  One day I packed lightly and took my car instead of the truck. I kind of tossed the auger into the back seat when I was done and the throttle handle fell off.  We figured I broke a part and contacted Eskimo to ask for a replacement.  Until then, we took a hook and put it on the trottle bar and then tied it to the auger handle. It took forever to get it started and when it did you had to walk around with the bit spinning to get your holes drilled.

Then we found out we didn't break a part and had to turn it upside down to get the bar back in.. the auger spit out fumes and reeked like gas for the rest of the winter.

Take care of your augers!

yes I agree nothing worse than a bad day on the water for lack of well taken care of augers, I have found one of the best things is to replace the cap after finishing your hole drilling learned after busting a hand auger and spending longer cutting holes than I did fishing

Het man, glad to hear you got a new auger. Just be careful not to damage the blades or you will not be a happy fisherman. Have fun with it and have a great season.

That's always great to hear. I always just file that type of info way back into my mental file box and save it for when I make another purchase.
