Call me shelterd ...... Burbot ?
« on: Jan 06, 2007, 08:14 PM »
Call me sheltered but what is a Burbot all about ?
I never even heard of one until I found this site .
Are they even an edible fish ?
They have to be one of the ugliest fish going next to an eel .
Are they considered a game fish in the parts of the country that they can be found ?

Again call me sheltered but can you fill me in a little on the mighty Burbot ?

                           Thank You

burbot are my favorite fish to eat other than walleye, they put up great fights and can be caught all day long. best time for them is feb. until ice out but will hit all winter. they are considered gamefish here in saskatchewan but people still leave them in piles on the lake >:(

Ugly fish that will try and wrap around your arm when you grab them and they're also pretty powerful. I love catching them, I release most of mine cause I don't eat fish but I know lots of guys love to eat them.
pour me another one, I'm finished with the other one

20 names for one fish depending on your location within the US and Canada.  Good fight, good eating, great fish!

I believe they get a bad rap when they come out of polluted, muddy, nasty, etc... waters!  Out west, they are "quite" often reveared for their tasty flesh.  Were I grew up in Wis. they were considered trash?  Then again, the waters were far from pristine and natural off the Winnebago chain.

Around here they are also called poor man's lobster...Plenty of guys fish for them on Cold Lake
when the laker's aren't biting.  Here they are also called ling cod, and do taste great, but
Cold Lake has pristine water, winter and summer.
Winter is the time of year toward which all that has gone before
seems but a preparation....winter, a quiet acceptance of what is
to come....Sigurd F. Olsen

Thank you ! I looked at every one of those photo's .
Looks like some of you have quite a PASSION for the Burbot .lol
I would like to try fishing for some but I'm not so sure I could muster up the kind of passion some of you have . I'm going to start asking around to see if anyone in my area fish for them and see if I can tag along to see what it's all about . I guess you have to be there to get the feel for it ! lol

I presume one of the guys you are talking about is I. Yes I love the burbot....heck my first wife was a burbot...big head, fat mid section, slimey, large fins that hung way down. The only difference was she wasn't long in the tail department, if you know what I mean ;)2

Great fish, then you eat one and they are even better. Enjoy your quest for them.

It's a tie between Laker and Burbot for the "fish I most want to catch" category.
I'd also love to try them on the table. i hated Lake trout, but burbot sounds soo good

;D  Here's a recipe for them , but if you didn't know use the fillets off the tail section .

         7up or Seltzer
         butter
         garlic
         Bay leaves
         ice cubes

Boil fillets in seltzer or 7up(important)

Half whatever you choose to use Seltzer or 7up & Water & 2 Bay leaves
Boil them for several minutes , strain water off & then put them in some ice water for 1 minute
then dip them in hot garlic butter ---- mmmh !

I also take the backstraps, just like how you'd take them off a deer.

I'm not sure if we have any here in upstate NY seeing that last year when i found this site i have never seen anything as ugly. But I'm sure if we had any I would go after them only because they look like they would put up a awesome fight.

We also just keep the back straps , they can be fun to clean, and do not stick your finger in their mouth to get out your hook they have jaws like a snapping turtle. Fun to get through your hole sometimes too, a bigger one can ball up in the hole making it tough to get up ;D

Ok just for clarification.  I take both the BACKSTRAPS and the TAIL Fillets.
Both are delicious. Besides once you take one set, it isn't much extra effort to take the others.  So why waste any?
