Hook size
« on: Aug 22, 2019, 06:07 AM »
What is the best hook size for salmon and Brook trout. What about big lake trout as well? Trying to be set up correctly for the season.
Thank you for the help

I’d say 6’s, probably octopus hooks, but I do like bait holds to, depending on the application. For big lakers, depends on the bait size and type. There are guys here that target lakers that can help ya more with that. Mostly, you want a hook big enough so that it doesn’t bury in the bait w/o hooking the fish.

the sz. 4 gami's octopus will handle the togue.  i use sz6 for salmon and brookies because i sometimes use smaller bait.

Small mouth = small hook.
Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

When I fish for brookies i use small dace, with a size 8 hook. Medium shiners I tend to use size 6 circle hooks. In combination to hooks size line weight I find to be just as important.

Small hooks 8 and 10's  I have caught small brookies and large togue, I usually don't carry anything bigger.
Bait goes on the hook... hook goes in the water...smelt is in the water...OUR SMELT!!!

I am thinking this year of trying a 1/0 Gamakatsu octopus hook with larger bait for large fish. I like the gap difference for narrow fish mouths and better hook sets.
