Good Science lesson CB!  Alot of mis information is flying around on this board lately. The lake ecosystem is complex and there are natural as well as human factors at play.  Making uninformed statements about lake management and false assumptions about fish-fish and fish-habitat interactions helps no one.
If you want the most accurate information in terms of what's going on in the lake get in touch with any of the Staff listed on this website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/32616.html
You pay their salary, they study fish and wildlife for a living/professionally, and they are all really great people who would be happy to chat with you.

welcome aboard, newbie... Mayville is a great spot for the gills but don't plan on a large number of keeper sizes but long point is a good spot for you to try for the perch.
When hell freezes over, i'll be ice fishing there too!!

Yes you can access the lake from there.  Fished it many years ago, didn't do well.  But, you never know.

After 3 trips catching lots of gills at the north end I tried for some crappie after dark... Early after afternoon is usually when I'm done fishing but this past week didn't set up til 3pm... Both days fish turned off the bite before 6... Fished till 8 with no craps on the ice ???.... I hope this snow keeps off the lake...

ice nut so far this year the area has had 88 inches of snow - and last night im guessing we had eight to ten inches of snow - walking on the ice in Mayville wasn't bad last Thursday or until yesterday due to the snow mobiles traveling on the ice but now the drag of a shelter could be a problem... Good luck in any attempts made...

I'm heading out in the am come hell or high snow banks. Been shoveling/snow blowing all day today. We ended up with about a foot over night.

I built one thinking it would make the drag easier plus my sled wasn't big enough to haul my hub shelter anyway.  Last Friday we went out in the slush and 6" - 8" of snow at longpoint.  The drag out wasn't bad, but coming back in I think the slush froze to the bottom of the skis and made things worse.  I'm not looking forward to the next drag in 6"+ unless everything is completely frozen.

Read the prior post to yours, Rando3369 said Friday out of Long-point was slush.  I myself have not run into slush of any significant degree out of Midway, Pendergast or Mission Meadows I have fished the last 2-weekends.

It might be a good idea to take a snow blower.  Make a path out to the fishing grounds.

It occurs to me that maybe smitty sled owners could take advantage of what those suicidal skiiers use on the bottom of their skiis............... wax. It will keep the frozen slush from sticking.

a good 6" over night. Wind drifted any packed trails in. Now the slush is building. Getting deep out there. Please use caution going out. It's a workout just to walk through it.

Does anyone on this thread know anyone that goes by the name Opie[spelling]?  Met him at Long Point a week or so ago.  He was going to Bear Lake and said he was going to contact me on this thread.
