Sardines on tip ups
« on: Feb 13, 2003, 09:25 AM »
has anyone ever used canned sardines on tip ups? I think they would prolly work good because they are so oily and smelly. I was also wondering if DEC would consider them baitfish?

I have used frozen SAardines, but canned would be pretty tough to keep on a hook?  You may want to use some egg mesh used to wrap salmon eggs for Salmon or Steelhead fishing.  In Idaho they wrap canned tuna in mesh and fish for King Salmon with it.  Worth a try I guess. :'(

I've heard that you can use smelt in tip ups also. And I've heard that in minnesota they arre pretty effective for northerns and event walleyes. I'm sure that if smelt work sardines will work also.

As hard as it is to keep a canned sardine on a hook I'll bet the cracker is even worse!  ;D ;D

In Idaho you can't use live bait.  So they jig dead smelt.
It works.

Smelt here in wisconsin works great for northern pike.Use them on a hanger hook and use nails to balance it out to hang straight. This is the only way I fish for northerns. You can expect 30in.or better fish]

Frozen sardines or herring work great for pike and lake trout. They stay on quick strike rigs fine, just use #6 or #8 hooks.

I use sardines all of the time.  i buy them frozen at large grocery stores in the city.  I also buy herring and anchovies.  They are cheaper at the store than at tackle shops!!
Caught 3 with sardines today!  Just little dinks though.
