When is it too cold for you to ice fish?
« on: Jan 06, 2005, 03:05 PM »
Last night I drove down to the local reservoir to check the road accessability and it was 30 below. I was wondering if it ever gets too cold for you guys to fish. If so, at what temperature?

Anything below freezing. ::)

Ok, seriously, I don't have a shanty so anything below -17 C is cold for me.

I think it all depends on the wind.  It can get pretty windy here some days causing it to be like -40 wind chill.  That is no fun, cause your ice house is flopping around and holes freeze up and all sorts of other problems.  I will go out at most any temperature(as long as it is humanly reasonable) as long as it is not too windy.

How about...what is too much wind to fish in.   ;D

It's not the cold so much as the wind, Lake George's winter "breezes" can make you wish you were back in bed... almost

Never too cold for me. I fish in -40 temps with howling Colorado  winds sometimes. With proper clothes, a shelter, and goretex/windproof insulated parkas and bibs/pants will take care of anything.

Depends on how good the fish are biting!!!  :P  I've gotten real warm when it was -20 pulling up a walleye.

Definitely a function of the wind.  We have fished in temps of -25 with no wind.  However, if the wind picks up significantly, we only jig in the shanty.  If the wind gets really bad, we pack up and get out of there before the shanty gets destroyed! ;)

I'll add my name to the ones that don't fish in the wind. Most anyone can brag about being out in the cold with the clothing available today, but add wind and you've got a whole different ball game.

Well, taylor reservoir in colorado gets unbearable. With temps that average -20, and lows usually around -40, and wind well around 20 mph everyday...it gets awful. I remember a couple years ago at taylor it was -32 f and the wind was blowing well over 30 mph. that was too cold. Taylor reservoir is windy nearly every day I have ever been there, wind usually is around 20mph. The early morning, when the air temp is -30to -40 is the warmest because the wind isn't blowing until about 1:30. Then you see everybody leave the lake because no amount of clothes can handle that. I usually get in my chair and slouch down so the wind doesn't hit me. I've had the wind blow me and my chair over though. Definitely not a good place to be when the wind kicks up.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

The coldest was -23 and the fish were biting so with the "catching fish factor" it was really 0.  You know that catching fish adds 20 or 30 degrees to the ambient temp.  I did have my doubts one time after hiking 500 yards in 18" of snow with slush under it, I took off my hat and my hair froze.  I digress, cold?  What cold?

Never, as long as you have the proper clothing on it is not a problem. Last winter it was -10 and I had just drilled my holes and set up the  radio and decided it was a good time for a nap. I got confortable in my chair and fell asleep for a hour, mind you I still do not have any type of shelter. I woke up and put my shiners on and started fishing. Turned out to be a great day.

Never been too cold!  Just some days aren't as fun as others.  Wind can dampen the day but I can handle that too.  Couple extreme cold with wind and ya just gotta be careful.  Wet hands in low windy temps can be a problem.  Hey, that's why we have shacks and a jigging hole!  Been on some cold fishing trips though, gotta admit a nice sunny, windless day can't be beat!
