is there any good way of keeping perch from messing with your bait and setting off your tipups? the only way i have found was with larger bait but that can sometimes be a problem.

It depends on the perch; on a really good perch lake I use at least a medium shiner, sometimes even a little larger. You won't get nearly as many flags from smaller perch, and it certainly won't deter real bass from hitting. Of course when 11'' and bigger perch start hitting it's a real problem......not!

I set my polar tipups to the heavy setting this will not stop them from killing the minnows but it does stop the the flags. This way if a flag pops you know its a bigger fish. On the other hand you can jig them up and relocate the small ones to another spot. ;D
