Title: Early season big walleyes
Post by: TRT on Feb 26, 2024, 03:39 PM
My brother and I were not going to fish our typical weekend in January. I head south by late Jan and he had commitments mid month.
I found us a spot in Quebec. We drove all night (Mon) Christmas night leaving at 10pm. We were home late Th night. My kids were at home with the mrs.
We arrived at 7am and were taken by snow machine out to the spot. We caught 2 small sub slot, 2 slot fish (keepers) and
11 fish that averaged 25 in 3 days. I hope pics post. All fish over 18 inches were released to spawn per the slot limit.

First fish my brothers was 11 pounds and I also caught PB fish at 27 inches. Guide said my brothers at that length
was at least 11 if not 12 pounds. We did not weigh a fish. Guide dropped us off and picked us up hours later and gave us
suggestions. Most fish were caught on dead shiners.

Nice eyes.  That no live bait reg in quebec is a challenge for sure.  Some eyes like that caught south of the border too this year.

Those are some really nice eyes. What does a license cost for a 3 or 5 day go for non- resident

Beautiful, healthy looking Walleyes -- certainly a successful trip -- congrats -- (I like the slot system they have up there focused on preserving the spawners -- need more of that down here...)!

License was like $25-30 US after conversion. Canada is incredible fishing value now with exchange at 1.36 Canadian for every US dollar spent.
Bro and I (group of 6) are booked for second week June in Ontario fly in walleye/pike. $1100 Canadian is just over $800 US. Trip includes flights, cabin, boat, motor, all fuel, incredible fishing. We drive 20 hours to get there. Nakina Ontario (near Geraldton) is the area we depart from fishing just west of Lake Nipigon.

That is east of Nipigon. Sounds like a crazy deal. This would be at least double that price up in the wabakimi area.

That’s not bad for the license cost and that sounds like a great trip. You get out into those places and the fishing pressure is minimal and should be able to get into some big fish. Hope all goes well and see a report when all is done. Good luck
