took it out for the first time this weekend. this was her maiden voyage.
i was going for major king kong but i got nothing on slim pickens...

but it got me thinking, we should try for smitty sled races. any takers?

props to blufloyd who helped me with some dimensions, info and encouragement.

Very nice job. I built one similar to that, but I made my own tent. Also made the skis to tip down so the sled is on the ice when fishing.

I'm in!
I've had mine up to 50mph behind the sled with a solid tow bar!

Nice build. I like it. How are the pvc pipes as far as wind and side loads? any bending or flexing?
Do you think the cold will affect the pvc?

Sweet Smitty there sinneD.  Can you show us a close up of how you put the seat/bench on it.  I think I can imagine how it is mounted and still lets the poles flip over and clear but would like to see that to make sure I understand.

I have an old pair of x country skis from when I was in college ages ago and I may just have to put a Smitty together for a summer project.  I only have 3 shanty's right now.  Can't have too many you know.

Nice job, and just a note, PVC will not stand up to extreme cold well, it has a tendency to shatter.

There's nothing wrong with your set up and will work well.

Great design!  Exactly what I was thinking in my "smitty flip" comments.

Sorry, I dropped the ball on this. Moving, new job, life gets in the way of fun.

I wanted as little material used as possible. Weight, fuss, muss, ets....

Bench -  i will have to put up pictures to show better, but I basically notched the board to fit between and around the pipes. it kind of wedges between them. You have to take the bench out to flip the poles over. I have since mostly stopped using the seat and only have a stadium seat pad on there.

PVC- yes, not the best material out there but so far so good.  I like it better than EMT.

Ski mounts were the tough part to get simple. They are ok, ?I wish I had more clearance for deeper snow.

EDIT: Technically, its not a true Smittly since its not a tub and removable. Its a tip-over based shelter on ski's

I just realized that photobucket pics are gone...
I just re-uploaded them here

That's the problem with a Smitty Sled you don't want to try to pull it down a slope.

That's the problem with a Smitty Sled you don't want to try to pull it down a slope.

That's why you make your tow rope long enough that you can walk and control it from behind.

Nice job, sinneD.
