I was always a subject of debate, but for a good reason. I would crush those browns, cutts, bows,huge pike...would post pics of all sorts of lunkers caught...had the state record catch and release bluegill, used to post pics of 12-13" gills from 1 special fishery which drew a ton of debate, I think mostly cuz I was a kid outfishing the grown men on here! However I see now why im in Michigan why people thought I was lying about all the trout I caught in Colorado, I used to catch more there in 1 trip than a whole season in MI, EASILY. A whole year was more trout than Ive ever caught in MI. Never would I believe someone here in MI if they said they caught 50 trout on the river in the day, ranging from 8-24", lol. Biggest gill I've ever caught in MI was only 9.5", and that was 12 yrs ago. Will say I still do really well on the pike and SMB, did as good on browns as anyone in SE mi this year as well especially considering the trout desert it is, have gotten some really nice walleyes, catfish, etc., very nice fishing in MI if you know where to go for a myriad of species.
I am a professional scientist now at age 32, 10+ patents, multiple articles in scientific journals. Used to draw a lot of ire/debate about my scientific capability on here when I was 16 trying to disseminate the literature and fisheries management, showing how wrong Colorado was to kill their monster pike, smallmouth, rainbows, etc. I can also state now I was right then. BUT I also have much thicker skin and dont give a darn what people think. You think my 32" pike pic is a 30"? Don't care. I also think fishing forums and forums in general are a lot more chill now, so hoping this one has evolved similarly.
I love fishing here in MI and have been at it pretty hard the last 13 years, so I know a thing or two but still learning. I am a bit behind the curve on icefishing though, had to sell a lot of gear including my fl-18, tipups, etc., to get through college and then of course had to pay student loans for years...still paying those but am finally in good enough fiduciary position to start ice fishing again -- it is an expensive hobby after all. But of course the weather has to cooperate, and it is much too warm...

My guess is that everybody just got 12 years older (or more) in the 11 years you have been gone.
Probably we are all more grumpy but simply don't feel it is worthwhile to spend our limited energy disputing on a blog.

If you want to hear humble, I've steelhead fished 7 times in 2020, 56 hrs on the water, only bite was an 11" brown trout. To top it off, I sprained my ankle on black friday while hopelessly flailing away (please no Joe Namath comparison). This knowledge that trout fishing is like this in a lot of the country has certainly humbled me back from my 30-50 trout days without much effort on the Colorado River. I've caught 20 trout THIS YEAR.
Unfortunately our ice just isn't here yet in MI, very warm still. So I can't give up steelie fishing...My buddy is taking me out next week though on his boat, since he has caught a handful this year he will let me take first bite (trolling). Course, a bite isn't a guarantee.
I see that iceshanty has a culture that is just as positive as always. ::)

My sole intention is for positive interaction.
Last year, Iceassin, you were lucky...you guys in SW MI actually had ice better than a lot of mid MI, and of course SE MI where I have been for about 8 years always struggles with ice...Knew a guy in Saginaw who said he never would've dreamed he had to drive 2+hrs north, OR south, to icefish.

Not necessarily a bad point. One most certainly creates their own reality, in a way...or at least frames/shapes it, however others do also contribute greatly. I am part of another forum for fishing and have been since basically I left these ones, I have only ever had a negative interaction with 1 member in all those years. I will say I've already got negative interactions from many on this site, just in this post, without any sort of reason for it? Truly a shame. However, I'm going to keep at it though, hopefully I will be able to adhere to the wisdom of Galatians, 6:7.

Hey esox, I see you are in SW WI. How far from Menominee, MI? I've never been there, but I've seen at least a decent job in my field there a few times....I keep hearing about the much better fishing (esp for salmon, steelies, lake run browns) on the lake michigan side of wisconsin, as compared to MI...and it has me thinking, since Menominee, MI, basically borders WI...

Actually it's SE WI. About halfway between Madison and MKE.
Marinette/Menominee is about halfway up the state from me. Plenty of opportunities there. Green Bay to the south on the WI side and LBDN to the north. LBDN has a terrific walleye and perch fishery with some decent pike to be had and GB has really everything that swims in Lake Michigan. Not any kind of trout or salmon guy so can't help with that. I do know that there are plenty of seasonal opportunities from GB all the way south to Milwaukee (and beyond) for spawning trout and salmonids. Spectacular ice fishing for browns and bonus bows right in the harbor @ Milwaukee.
So quid pro quo Mr. Bear. What is your particular arena of scientific expertise? No reason really, just a curious guy...

Saw a video on the ice fishing from some show (last year) with Milwaukee literally in the back ground. I actually think one of the guys took a taxi right to the shore, as he had a late night ;-) They caught some great fish!, I'll try to find it.

If I get pm back I will talk with you about my career if you are interested, I will say it is related to environmental chemistry...people here used to argue I wasn't a scientist.... well, now I am, and have been for years....really anybody can be a scientist though and we all are to some degree. I want our resources to be here for the next generation, including my own children. :)
Obviously I have big time common ground with everyone here and hope we can have a better time than >11 years ago...I'm only 32, I've been a member here more than half my life!!! Also, we all enjoy our natural resources, and we are all fishing freaks...I mean, come on, we are posting on an ice fishing website!

Urban fishing can offer surprisingly overlooked opportunities, and shouldn't be counted out!

As an older fella here I don't process math quite as well as I used to...and my abacus is on the fritz. But your 32, became a member here 11 years ago, which would put you at 21. Then you say you've been a member here for half your life...which would be 16. Wait...I think I got it. C = pi*r*2, carry the 1, Johnny had 5 apples and...never mind. My head is starting to hurt. I need a nap. :blink:

Unfortunately I already act like a crotchety old man. I shudder to think in 30 years... :o
And when I see Mn, I always instantly think of Grump Old Men, the best ice fishing movie of all time! Any ice up there yet Gunflint?

Minnesota gives authentic meaning to the phrase "Grumpy Old Men"- all other states, including the ones with cheese, are simply wannna bees.
There just started to be fishable ice on the Gunflint Trail. But, I fish Lake Trout and the season won't open for another month so this ice is simply cosmetic.

Another reason may be, as Rebelss has so kindly pointed out, is simply that we are more honest than anybody else including those from states with " " (fill in the blank but it begins with "Ch").

Exactly, it is actually insurmountable for old men in a state with a Football team to truly be grumpy to the level found in Minnesota.

I mean, you guys lost to University of Michigan this year, had to be awful to do that!!!!...btw I lived in Ann Arbor area most of the last 8 years, about 1 mi away from the stadium for some of it in fact, and take joy in Michigan defeat (sorry 'iceassin') ha!
