5 gallon pack- could be useful!
« on: Jan 19, 2014, 12:01 PM »
I was looking for ways to modify a 5 or 6 gallon bucket so that I could wear it on my back like a backpack and then sit on it to fish. Found some diy ideas, and then came across a link to this website. These things are way better and probably much more comfy than what I could make. What do you all think?

Pretty cool! Especially if you wanna hit an out of the way pond and bringing a sled is impossible. But don't sell yourself short. I always see people getting rid of camping size backpacks either at garage sales or curbside.
But thanks for the post.. I think it would work great!

You could buy one of those wrap around the bucket rod holders then one of the Back Pac straps and run and gun all day just carrying your auger. Pole jigs and scoop in the bucket.

When my son was about 7 and wanted to trap with me I simply took the straps off of a worn out trapping basket. the fit nicely around the bucket making a nice pack bucket for my son.

I saw it in the top of the trap shed a while back. The son turned 43 in December.

WOW  am I getting old.

I wonder if the square 5gal buckets would be better for this, and more comfortable than a round bucket on your back.

I was thinking about a square bucket too. That'd sit flatter on your back. It kind of looks like they are just wide Velcro straps that wrap around the bucket, so that may work. I decided to order one, so when it shows up I can give a better review!

I'm going to use it as my "after work minimal gear hauler" that I can just stash in my car w my Milwaukee drill clam conversion auger. Just planning to clip my little softsided rod case to the pack and take off on foot!

If you can get a hold of the old external aluminum frame packs, the bucket can be strapped to the frame or tied to it pretty easily and the piece of the frame that folds out to support the weight of your gear holds the bottom of the bucket pretty well.

I was looking for something like that for a while. Thanks.

What I ended up doing was getting an ALICE pack and frame, and bolting on a shelf on the bottom for added support. Plenty of room for way too much stuff.

Picked up a square 5gal bucket and ordered one of these.

Im going to have my wife sew sides on them with velcro pouches to carry small tackle bins. As well as holsers on the outside to hold 4 tip ups and my scoop. On the front will be 3 or 4 rod holsters.
Inside the bucket will be 4 hole covers (when needed) my flasher, and a small container with a dozen shiners (i may have to carry this, not sure yet). On the cover i will attach a nice cushion to sit on. And ill just carry my folding hand auger or spud.

KB how did that alice frame work for you? I was thinking about doing that while I was reading the thread. I have one hanging in my garage right now that I used for hauling Texas rigged duck decoys ;D

It works pretty good.  I can carry more than I need to between the bucket and the packs pockets.
They are charging $11 and change shipping for something you can just stick into a padded envelope and mail.   Whew!  I got my Alice pack off of Amazon for $45 including shipping.

I had gotten a large and it's almost too big

I met a guy on the ice Saturday who, along with his father and brother, made their own pack baskets. Seems the dad knew a guy who makes them for a living and they got invited over. He said it was pretty easy but that was because they had the proper tools and instructor.
In my opinion, these would be the updated version of those. And add a lid and you can sit as well.

Not quite a pack, but I have had a shoulder strap on my bucket for years. Two 1/4" holes and a couple loops of 550 cord tied with figure eight knots. and the lid still goes on.

Just took some pics for a different thread so here it is. Nothing fancy though. Cost = $0 if you have any old duffle bag, tackle bag etc laying around.

Good Luck & Good Fishing!

Pretty expensive with shipping charges........A few years back I took and cut up and old backpack and took 4 screws and mounted it to bucket.......optimally you want the straps as high on bucket as possible so it doesnt get top heavy. This still allowed for my HT bucket caddy to be wrapped around .....
