FB, I remember that story and I tried that last year too. I still think your sled is the coolest.
anyone ever tried riding their ice sled full of gear down a hill????
anyone ever tried riding their ice sled full of gear down a hill????yep we did that until we hit a little deep drain creek that crossed the path and we all went flying and my buddy ended up with a tree right between his legs. :-\ And another guy hit his head on a tree, luckly didn't break the skin, but ended up with a headache for the morning. :D

Well I built my sled yesterday (no pics yet, still needs paint) and I put it on the scale and 30# I had to use wood, didn't want to fork out $ for a jet sled that didn't do what I wanted it to. 30# is a little heavy but I mostly fish lakes that are 8" plus of ice so 30# isn't to bad. I have all the room in the world with built in seat. I should have pics by Friday. I was inspried by another sled on here and I will post to let all see. The season is upon us so get off the net and get on the ice! ;D
I think this is the best sled I've seen so far Northwoods... fantastic job!
Hey Crappieattitude, a friend of mine has one of the same sheds you do. I use my Chevy to get it where it needs to go all the time. :woot:
IceMedic,LOL - Jeff, actually its a piece of marine grade plywood that I sealed with paint and poly.......
Is that a child size body board you are using for the sled platform?
Jeff
I know this topic has been posted before, but I'm getting ready to build a new sled so if anyone has any ideas they would like to share (with pics) if their ice fishing rigs, that would really be awesome!love to post a pic but having a really hard time posting them
Pigshanks is that a sled or economy car carrier?

Nice sled Dawger - welcome to IS too! I have one of your poles as a fishing decoration in my cabin. Never seen one before until that one and now the ones in your pics! They are indeed neat although yours look like mint condition compared to the one I came across!!!
Mahogany tipups, man thats gotta be a first. Do you use them all the time or are they just for company?
My jet sled is getting some holes in the bottom and I was thinking of attaching a piece of linoleum on the bottom which i think will help with both pulling and durability. Does anyone see any drawbacks to using linoleum in this way? I figure i can use ALOT of rivets to attach it. Any ideas?I think Linoleum will work, but may get brittle and crack/break once it hits that cold ice. I think I would probably try contact cement as that stuff is really good for those kinds of surfaces. I think rivets would have a tendency to dig into the ice making for a lot of resistance.

where can a person get plans for your sled?I do not have plans. I would help you build one.

That's my fully loaded calving sled. I can stand the Clam 2000s on edge there if I need to. I want to make a bit of a stand for my powerhead so that I can rearrange things a bit. I've also been meaning to do something like the eye bolts VC used on his. There are a few different sizes.
The beauty of these is that they are extremely tough and are made to be hauled around farm yards (hence gravel and such). Now, mine hasn't seen as many miles as Slipbob's Jet Sled, I'm sure, but it will outlast most of the other plastic type sleds out there.
Another thing my wife thought of that we may try is applying ski wax to the raised "runner" areas to help it slip a bit better since I have trouble leaving the kitchen sink at home and it gets a bit heavy to pull.

Hey I was wondering if you could tell me where ,what brand or anything about the calving sleds its just what I want but I can't find 1 or even anything about them
Thanx

First time out with it today. The box serves as a bench and can hold tipups, tacklebox, and bait bucket. I plan on making the deck larger and adding a bucket or two. The sled itself is obviously homemade but not by me. Used it as an actual sled in my younger days.hey i thinks that's a great sled, looks like it moves real good over the ice. how do you like the skies on it. i have a question about the skies do they stick to the ice at all, when i pull my home made sled across the ice, it heats up the wood runners that I've got and they stick to the ice when i stop? just wondering if they would help mine out.

The trick is not to add more than a hundred pounds or they will heat when over loaded. I prefer the skinny skis over down hill ones that weigh more.
Thanks to all the photos....i have created my ice sled..I tried it today for the first time and it worked amazing. Thanks for all the posting of photos to give me motivation and ideas to create my own.

Do you use charcoal for that stove? I'm curious as to why you made it 3 cans high?yes i made it three high so i could sit in my sled with it on it's back and stay warm using it to make coffee, cook lunch of keep warm on those bad days. yes i only use charcoal in it. a 7 LBS. bag will last me several trips. using it almost all day. i had another one that was built out of 10" stove pipe but a 25 LBS. bag would only last a day, maybe. it will heat out a coffee pot, but with the wind up you'll need to have it in a protected area. the thing works real good, but slow. i love making lunch on it.
Hey... " WYIfish"I am receiving fishing communal tutoring in the fine art of catching the 20-40 pound lake trout in Flaming Gorge. I am humbled.
Nope don't have a flag for it as of Yet.. But from the get go I wanted to fly the Flag that they have on from " Iceshanty"
and that is the reason why... for wind etc.. I have a flag holder already built in on the unit already along with a coat rack holder...LOL
The Iceshanty flag is about $45 us.. so I'm a saving my pennies... * :) *

Hey, if you don't mind me asking? How do you do that, with the link thingy and underline it? I have always been doing the copy and paste thing.
LOL.. I wish at times there was a little bigger Sled in my Garage "fishinpole1e1". But I don't have the vehicle for it.( or room in the garage) All we have is a Little SUV for my PVC... LOL it all we need here in the city.. Had Trucks before, been there done dhat. With the sled before it was great for small cars and now with the rack it's SUV's ( or trucks). :)

Just put this one together for a trip last week. All aluminum, used snowboards for runners they seem to keep it up on the snow pretty well. pulls easy and holds all our gear. The augar sits on the top and the coleman heater warm's it up for a heated seat.it may pull easy with that machine in the back round " lol" but it looks like a bear to load on a trailer or in the back of a truck. how ever i do like it, and I'm jealous. it is a great looking box. nice job.

Hi " fishlessman"
G'Day
That works just fine. I love the Skies. I bet it pulls like a dream, with or with out the ATV.
You also have so many options left.( If you choose). Some well place extra Eye Bolts on the sides and you have the
capability to bungee strap extra stuff on top if only needed.
LOL.. Oh, oh, that is me... LOL.. I'm slowly turning into my DAD. Collect it all and haul everything, including the neighbors Kitchen sink. LOL.
It looks and I bet it works great Fishless. (As a Taxi included)

G'd day Sir.
Brother it sounds like you and your Son have a great day planned. I would love to see lots
of pics of your other two sleds. Excuse my dumbness "G" but I do not know what a
"Smitty" Style Sled is. I would love to see it, it sounds very interesting.
It sounds like you had the same feeling and thoughts as I did at the very beginning. I, as you had thought of dong something with my sled as well, and used it in the raw state the first year of my Ice Fishing.
I spent the whole summer planning it in my head and thinking about it. But I got the courage to tackle the
PVC after seeing the pics of " Barts" Sled and I went from there.
LOL... I'll try to keep this short... LOL.. My A.D.H.D just kicked in... LOL
I'm dyeing g to see the new version of your sled that you and your son are going to invent. Please
show us all the pictures of it. I really do not know what a " Smitty" is.
I have had the thought of SKIES in my mind as of late though as I have been thinking of building a Trailer for my Otter Ice Fishing Sled.
As I bought my first gas powered Ice Auger this year and after I finish with my last two phases ( Propane Stove, wheels Etc.)
I have been thinking if I can make a holder for my little sled for the Auger or have to put it on another Ski type unit to also pull behind it????
You have got me pumped here "G". I think I need to get off my butt and work on my sled today.. Thanks.
I now have my Sled set up for both WINTER and SUMMER use now. ( hence the wheels , I might try to post later
some pics of the wheels and stove holder.)
Since i have been on this site ( Ice shanty) I have been so impressed how nice and easy going everyone on here has been to me as I learn this new sport for me.
Enjoy your day and have a blast with your son and we are all looking forward to seeing your new Hybrid Sled.

Hey " G"It pulled well on the snow and ice, and did not sink in, but if you had even a slight uphill pull at the end of the day to get it back to the truck the weight of it and the equipment in it would kill you. The plywood and 2x4's are just too heavy. It was also quite a bear to get into the back of the truck. The new model won't have this problem. It is going to be the skis, PVC and a luan floor. I would rather have equipment weight than sled weight. We always tend to take too much along! Isn't that what ice fishing is all about?!
Even with the Skis.... it was hard to pull??
Did it push snow or did it need to sit higher but still on skis?
8)
The first design I had a couple of years ago did blow over in the wind. I thought I might put a couple of...
holes in the skies for some anchors. The PVC all breaks down to fit in the black storage box.
I have a few ideas churning. I really only get a chance to play in the shop on the weekends, so, bright and early Saturday morning we will be back at it. I had to go today and pick up some more pipe fittings. LOL Thank god they are inexpensive. I bought 30 T's, 20 90 degree elbows and 10 45 degree elbows to get started. I picked up 20 more T's today. Probably won't need them all, but it's good to have a few extras. You never know when inspiration may strike and just have to add something to your creation. Oh, I almost forgot, I also picked up some solder for making the "A-BOMB" jigs.......................................................................
An early season ice sled that I've used for decades in NE Ohio
(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/710/originalicebox.jpg)
Here's my Jet Sled I just finished working on. Mounted the rod/spoon holders which works out well. I also needed more room in the sled for my power auger and flasher, etc. The buckets just took up too much space and I wanted them more secure so I set up the rig you see.Hey Junior58, did you make those bucket holders? I like that idea!
Nice design Junior I could be wrong but after you put some water in those two buckets might be kinda of rear end heavy and you could be doing some wrestling with your gear nice work though :tipup:Thanks, I thought of that actually. Right now in the pictures the sled is empty but the larger Frabill bucket is loaded with all my tackle boxes and extras under the seat and used for sitting only. I only have a small minnow bucket in the smaller one. I added a longer pull rope to keep the pulling angle down as I'm 6'7" and not too level angle wise when pulling ;D. The neutralizer to the weight balance is my Electra Lazer auger which has the powerhead in the front of the sled in a full case which more them evens out the balance when pulling. When the sled is empty at rest (with buckets on back) it doesn't even lift up.
Hey Junior58, did you make those bucket holders? I like that idea!Nope, I ordered them from a horse feeding store on the net. Esentially they are horse feed bucket holder which are the same size as most ice fishing buckets. They are designed to go over a horse stall door but I put them over a piece of unistrut. They were $19 a piece.
Look what I found on Craigslist

Hey WildoutdoorAddict
Nice set up. Man it looks light. Excuss my dumbness but are those Cross country skis?
The reason I ask, is because a friend of mine gave me some old skis that happened to be cross country skis.
I have not had a chance to work on em yet. But I did notice that have a certain length of some kind of felt.
( I take it is to help grab the snow on a forward stork to maintain momentum.)
Anyways if your are Cross country did you dig out the felt part?
Yes they are cross country skis! They are very thin on the ends I used 1/4 inch carriage bolts to bolt the pipe caps to them so the round head won't grab on anything while dragging it. There was no felt on these skis, just the notched bottons that someone mentioned.
8)
Wow!! What a sweet sled! Is that thing still pretty light?
Would seperate the tipups from that auger though. Two tier compartment?
Tight lines
The other one with cloth was a big inspiration to me! I really wanted a roof though, and I wanted hard panels. I often make coffee/soup/chili with a small butane stove right next to me. It works great. I am planning on a big upgrade of the ski/base this weekend. It should be quite the system when I am done.Looks Nice!
Tired of all the jawing going on on this thread. Everytime it pops up on my updated thread list, all I see is jabber jabber jabber. Happy New Year craigthor
Thanks for the description of your unit. I had never heard of a Ice Hopper, so I checked it out on You Tube. Neat!!
I like all the extra custom wiring you have done. What size of pop up tent? Would not any size of pop up tent be too heavy to hang off the side?
I Like that you and "richstick" have kept it small. For those of us that unfortunately do not have a snowmobile yet, have to find a way to pack up the small units. ( but don't get me wrong I would love to have a snowmobile... I could just image what I would be pulling if i had a snowmobile or ATV. )
We need to start a thread for the design and ideas of what we can place on our small pull sleds. ... LOL ...
It is nice that the folks on these threads take the time and thoght to work on there units as to have them work well for them.
Take Care. Thanks again for sharing all your pictures everyone.

Only looking at a one man pop up so only about 20 lbs max would be my guess. One of those thing I can keep i the car and only have to pull out on days when I absolutely need them......................

And ... and ... to bring the Kitchen Sink ... is wrong???not in my book! Im prepared! if the ice breaks off I can spend a few days lol comfy!
@)
Indeed, a nice job Hockeyboy. I am in the process of adding skis to my one man Frabill portable. The sled is molded for bait pail and such on the bottom, and it is extremely hard to pull in snow. Looks like I'll need the skis with all this snow. Hope you dont mind if I use the same system you did on top of the skis. I ordered some propylene strips I'm going to attach to the bottom of the skis. I have cross country skis, and they tend to grip more, so hence the propylene. Thanks windmill I would be flattered if you did the same thing but I have to give this thread all the credit espsecialy smitty0312,AltaIce and geothefisher I combine there ideas together. Thanks again everyone for sharing such great ideas.
On my Strikemaster Glide Lite this allows me to carry my Sonic Ice Hopper that holds my Vex, 5 Rod/ Reel combos, Ice Scoop, Glen's Outdoors 1 man Hub (for the really windy days), Tackle Bags, Propane Lantern (for night fishing).
Once I pop up the hub shelter it fits over the sled so I can keep everything inside the tent minus the auger. I can use the propane lantern for both light and heat if need be. Can honestly say with the Sno Suit I don't ever get cold but when I have a buddy go with its nice to have a base camp for them as they don't typically dress warm enough.
I still have a few things to finish up but will get those taken care of as I get time and once my power head arrives. Also this spring I plan on painting the PVC black and securing the pole holders once they are painted with a few screws. I also want to put some runners on the sled to help protect the bottom.
Craig
Attached propylene strips to the bottom of the skis. Wound kup using materials I had for mounting. I installed threaded floor flanges to the skis, then used 1/2" steel pipe. I attached metal pipes on the sled, and everything slides in place. All in all it made a huge difference pulling this sled in the snow. There was about a foot of snow on the ground, and without the skis on, I wouldn't drag it too far. It would drag me down, what a drag ! ::)
Craig, nice work on your sled. What did you use to house your battery on your ice hopper? Thanks, Pete
Hi AltaIce, the steel piping on the skis slides into the larger tubes that are mounted on the sled. Once you slide the skis in position, you're all set. Then they are removed by just sliding them out..............
hockeyboy1267: what size is the pvc? and how did you attach it to the skis? is this sled stable with all your gear? i am going to build a smitty sled this weekend and wanted to add more room for all my gear. looks like you might be hauling about the same amount of weight as i will be. any info would be helpful. thanks. Its 1-1/2". I attached the pvc by screwing caps to the wood on the the sled. It is very stable. Even considering that I built it to come apart in 5 piece to fit in my suburban, I glued the main walls together and drilled holes for pins where the unglued pieces attach. hope that helps its definitely made taking a bunch of stuff on the ice to easy

Heres my ALMOST FINISHED invention, the jigging sled.
Holds 16 (tight, 14 better spaced) rod combos inside and 8 outside for easy grabbing. Pool noodles were sacrificed....
Im guessing the total weight with rods/no other gear is 15-20lbs.

Looking for some help - somewhere I saw a pic of someone's sled. They'd made an auger holder out of two buckets - one with slots the auger would fit in that nested inside the other. The auger rode horizontally on the bottom bucket, locked into place by the slots in the top one.
Any help with this?

this the one I just made. I have shown it on the other threads. It is a little bigger than the last one.

Id be interested to hear how the PVC hols up in the cold....
It looks like an adjustable back window gun rack?

How did you hold your rods to the inside of the lid. I think I have the same tub
Just thought I would show the last shanty I made a few years ago. Also have been reading about Smitty sleds so I threw one together this afternoon.2Tall,

will refine the smitty sled once season is over.
Great way to trick out your storage locker Dead2fall! I have the same box... minus the lights, sound system, rod storage, and lid straps! :o
Awesome.
Anybody have any good ideas on how to attach conduit to a two man flip over hut to make the drad easier in deep snow
I have to show off my newly acquired "Ice Fishing Equipment Relocation Device" sled. I have been on hard water for about 3 years now (Camo_Fish showed me the light) and for the past two I have been using this el cheap-O kiddy sled to pull my gear. What ever works right? Well two years was to long with that thing. Below is a picture of the thing empty. Not very big huh?Your first sled is literally the exact one I've always used. Haha I'm shocked to see it on here

I had to put two board across it to hold my bait cooler, tipup box, as well as trying to keep the thing from tipping over. Almost every trip (especially in snow more than 6 inches deep) the thing would tip over on me. Oops there went the bait, hooks, jigs, etc. (its enough to drive you insane :cookoo: ) It also sunk in the snow making it hard to pull and any new gear had to be piled on top making easier to tip over. :%$#!: :%$#!: :%$#!:

Well yesterday I finally broke down and bought myself one of these jet sled I see everyone has. (I have pulled some gear in one before and WOW what a difference)

Man what a difference it makes when my gear is stod!!! No more tipovers, no more gear sliding off the board, and I know the thing pulls easier with the weight distributed better.

I can't wait to actually use it on the ice
So now that you have all read my boring little yahoo, lets see what you are all dragging on the ice. Post them all, pulled by human power or machine power. Stay on top y'all
Had some time over the weekend to mod my sled a little bit. I made a PVC frame and attached it to the sled with eye hooks. That way I can use bungees to attach things. The rod holder in the back still needs to be painted, but it is removable so that the sled can fit in my Ford Taurus. I covered the PVC in Plasti Dip, so we'll see how well it holds up. I'm optimistic!
Here it is empty:

This is how I like to start my ice sled mods every year. It doesn't always work out, but I thought I'd share. Lol:thumbsup:

I call it the Death Sled as opposed to Jet Sled, because I'm always dragging something dead out of the woods or off the ice.
I have an energizer headlamp, so it's already taken care of. ;D It's not fancy but beats the hell out of carrying crap.I'm not sure why I haven't made a sled until now...this thing is steps above nothing.

Here's my sled, fits perfect inside my Clam hub Base Camp when needed! Keeps everything nice and tidy and within arms reach at all times...

Morning fish4all, (( Very Nice Sled ))
Hope you and yours are doing well this holiday season.
Just wanted to mention that I love your idea of the side of the sled lighting system.
I think it is a excellent safety item for so many reason. being able to be seen from a little distance on the ice as well as giving you
that security of just walking around the area around the sled Etc.
Thanks for showing your ideas. Very cool.
Cheers,
AltaIce
